Saw the Hit The Road Stax Revue many many years ago in London. Myself and a mate saw the show 4 times @ different venues including a place called The Hot Potato - somewhere in the east end of London I think - actually managed to get a LP signed by most of the stars - still have it of course. Those were the days - all 1st class acts even at that early stage in their careers. Booker T was and remains a hero of mine.
This DVD release brings back great memories after 40 years.

The "Theme from Shaft" is now so ingrained in popular consciousness as the blaxploitation-movie track that it's hard to listen to it without a faint smirk. ("Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks?"!!) But if you can get past the inadvertent humour, it's still a devilishly exciting piece of music--all hi-hat 16ths, wah-wah guitar, strings and woodwind, like a Norman Whitfield Motown production taken to a baroque extreme. The rest of the album consists mainly of incidental mood music of no great worth: "Walk from Regio's", "Ellie's Love Theme"--you know the sort of thing. Isaac Hayes delivers everything I could ever ask for in music. His combination of sultry soul, slick jazz sounds, cool husky voice transport me to another realm of being. I have every intention of collecting all the albums. The "Shaft" is one of his best. My favourite track is 'Soulsville', though all the others are close to perfect.

Excellent, 2010-01-11
I love this music, can't stop playing tne CDs. Can't help it. I have to move everytime I play them. Excellent instrumental, classic, this music will never grow old. My daughter's fiance heard the CDs, liked the music and wanted to know more, so it was sorted. His gift for Christmas. Excellent! I say no more.
