A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector

  Artist: Phil Spector

This lavish holiday set has been called the greatest rock & roll Christmas album of all time. That's an opinion that's tough to argue with when you find yourself immersed in the massive sounds painstakingly crafted by legendary producer Phil Spector. His "wall-of-sound" technique is perfectly suited to the music of the season, as he proves with layer upon layer of piano, sleigh bells, buoyant percussion, and, of course, those legendary Spector sound harmonies. The Crystals turn their sassy interplay into sheer magic on "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town", The Ronettes stroll sweetly through numbers like "Sleigh Ride", while Darlene Love delivers areal knockout punch with her ...

The World of Vaughan Williams

  Artist: Various Artists

Vaughan Williams belongs to the English pastoral school, famously derided by Elisabeth Lutyens as the 'cowpat' movement! But for those unfamiliar with VW's music, for those who love unadulterated melody and for those who love the English countryside (cowpats included), this disc is a treat.

It contains some of VW's best loved works for small orchestra and voice. My personal favourites, Fantasia on Greensleeves and the Lark Ascending are given lush, rapt performances by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and in the latter, Iona Brown's violin sends the lark's song soaring. The highlight of the disc for me is 'Silent Noon'. This is a miniature masterpiece and distills all of VW's skill in marrying atmosphere and melody into four minutes of bliss. Philip Ledger gives a heart-breaking perfomance of this song - listen in particular to what he does with the last line ('When twofold silence was the song of love').

Make time for this - enjoy!

Loggins And Messina - Sittin' In Again At The Santa Barbara Bowl [DVD] [2005]

If you go to a Stones gig you will find a fifty year age cross section in the audience. This is not the case with L&M and, maybe I'm wrong, but if you weren't 'getting down' in 1973ish then you are unlikely to enjoy this. But if you were BUY THIS DVD. It is a very intimate concert relayed from Santa Barbara in 2005. There is plenty of interraction with all involved and it must have been great to have been there and see these guys and a great band after so many years. Kenny looks great. Jimmy looks like he's been eating too many pretzels but he still plays a mean set of strings! My one 'spit my dummy out' is that my favourite L&M track (Move On from the Mother Lode album) is not on it but it still gets 5 stars and multiple goose bumps of nostalgia. Thanks Guys!

American Folk Songs for Christmas

  Artist: Peggy Seeger

American Folk Songs for Christmas amounts to an extraordinary and large collection of unvarnished American folk songs sung and played by the Seeger family with help from British friends and folksinger-playwright Ewan MacColl and daughter Kitty. Unassuming and full of old-fashioned good times, this CD's simple pleasures are derived from gospel music and lost carols, mountain hymns, a sprinkling of popular standards, spirituals, and such "earthy" instruments as the concertina, fiddle, piano, dulcimer, banjo, jaw harp, whistle and plain-singing human voices and joyous handclaps. The disc's panoramic look into Christmas from another time and place is just right for th...

Ruth Crawford Seeger was a folk music fanatic who compiled a series of books, one of which was devoted to Christmas songs. It is from that book that the album title and all but two of the tracks are taken (the liner notes do not say which two), although some of the tracks are not performed exactly as Ruth described.

Three of Ruth's children (Mike, Peggy and Penny Seeger), four of her grandchildren (Sonya Cohen, Calum MacColl, Kitty MacColl and Kim Seeger) and Ewan MacColl, father of Calum and Kitty (their mother was Peggy), took part in the project. Note that Kitty MacColl must not be confused with Kirsty MacColl, a daughter of Ewan MacColl by a previous marriage. Kirsty, of course, was a brilliant singer in her own right and I've already reviewed Galore, the best compilation of her music.

The songs, mostly unfamiliar, are sequenced to tell the Christmas story. The first eleven tracks are about stars, shepherds, sheep and a journey to Bethlehem, so - you must wait till track fifteen (Baby born today) to actually hear about the birth. You will surely recognize Go tell it on the mountain and Twelve days of Christmas. I also recognized Christmas day in the morning, though it is rarely recorded these days.

There is variety in the arrangements - some solo, some duets and some choral - with various instruments being used, or sometimes none at all. Some of the instruments do not strictly fit the traditional concept of the album but the overall feel of the album is very traditional.

Unless you are really into traditional folk music, you may find that two and a half hours is more than you want of it in one session (you may prefer to play one CD then play other music before playing the other CD), but there is no denying the quality of the performances here.

The only other Christmas album I have that is comparable is Maddy Prior's Carols and capers. If you enjoy that album, give this a listen. And if you haven't heard that but you enjoy this, give Maddy Prior a listen.
