A beautiful selection of Claude Debussys works.
Thank goodness for the film Twilight for reminding me of it.

Peter and the wolf, 2010-03-27 This is a lovely CD for imaginative dancing/miming with children. My daughter loves it and spends time listening and hiding from the wolf, however her little friend (a 3 year old boy) got quite scared by the cat and wolf music and we had to turn it off.
We are really pleased with it though - sparks the imagination!

Well worth buying, 2010-07-05 Had listened to a preview of the CD prior to release on Classic FM and was delighted with my purchase. Really relaxing listening and I find it very destressing music as well. So glad I bought it.

This album, which catapulted Polish composer Henryk Górecki to into the international spotlight, takes texts born in pain and turns them into statements of affirmation through the use of music that ebbs and flows in mystic minimalism. The clear voice of soprano Dawn Upshaw, singing the Polish texts, is a large part of the success of this particular recording, but the music, contemporary without either dissonance or movie-music mawkishness, clarifies and uplifts the words. This is a moving and essential element of the modern repertoire. --Sarah Bryan Miller
the silence within, 2009-10-16 I find Henryk Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs to be one of the most amazing pieces of classical music. Perhaps it has something to do with me growing up in Poland and the fact that I understand that very powerful lyric (sounding very peculiar sang with British accent of Dawn Upshaw but this could be the most interesting release of this music). It probably has to do with the fact that I love ambient music and this symphony is very ambient. For me it is the atmosphere Gorecki is able to bestow upon us which means more here than the actual music. It is the silence within his music which I find so powerful. I have 6 versions of this symphony and sometimes I like to listen to them one after another to get a real powerful Gorecki experience. If you are reading this because you love this album and are looking for similar atmosphere than I would highly recommend listening to most of Gavin Bryars' music (Farewell To Philosophy, After The Requiem), Arvo Part (Tabula Rasa), Steve Reich (Music For 18 Musicians, Different Trains), or step aside from classical field and listen to Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun by Dead Can Dance.

Deluxe after all..., 2009-09-21 Upon seeing this at first I was furious. How many more times was I going to be tricked into buying this damn album?!? BUT, this time they changed it up and not only included everything (CD/DVD-A on 2 discs, 1 dvd), BUT they unearthed the HOLY GRAIL of Mike Oldfield...that is the BBC performance of Tubular Bells Pt.1 LIVE on a soundstage!
I had seen 5 minutes of a real bad bootleg VHS tape of this and was excited by it...imagine my surprise when seeing the found re-master of it! Seeing and hearing Steve Hillage, Fred Frith, Mick Taylor(!), Mike Ratledge, Karl Jenkins and Jimmy Hastings (those are the guys I can pick out) play this piece is very special.
Plus, Mike has had a go at re-mixing the whole album as well...brings certain parts to light while ignoring some of the charm of the original mix...cool, not too shabby. Nothing too extreme, just level and effect choices are different.
Say what you will about Mike, his interviews surrounding this release don't paint him in any sort of "rock lore" limelight, but this was an inspired piece recorded and released at a time that can never be duplicated.

Excellent reading, 2008-12-05 I bought this for my son but have also enjoyed listening to it myself.
The reader has a good reading voice (nothing like Julian Clary as another reviewer has suggested) and also does pronounce the names correctly - he uses the now generally accepted Heracles rather than Hercules and this has confused some people.
