Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One released this single disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to long-time Fabs faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s and beyond. But ...

The Beach Boys
The cynical may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Non-cynics, however, will appreciate what makes The Very Best Of... unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross-selection of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through to 1988's "Kokomo". All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decade...

The Rolling Stones
The best of the Stones' first three albums of hopped-up R&B, 12 x 5 hints at why there was more to this quintet than to blues-reviving brothers like the Yardbirds and the Animals. From the opening version of Chuck Berry's "Around and Around", Mick Jagger sings with a charismatic mixture of sexuality and menace. Even as a teenager--he actually looks alive in the 1964 album sleeve photo--Keith Richards shows a rare bluesman's confidence. It's unclear why covers of "Time Is on My Side" and "It's All Over Now" have become classic hits while the equally great "Susie Q" remains obscure. --Steve Knopper
