Only by the Night

  Artist: Kings of Leon

Already on course to be one of the year's biggest sellers, Only By the Night has sealed Kings of Leon's unlikely position as Britain's favourite American rock band. The Followill brothers (and cousin) have always been tagged as part of a southern rock tradition of family bands such as the Allmans and Lynyrd Skynyrd, a label they vehemently refuted. But the skinny lads certainly looked like a classic rock act, even as they took musical inspiration from indie contemporaries The Strokes and eighties new wave acts such as The Cure and New Order. Only By the Night is effectively a sequel to 2006's terrific Because of the Times, their third record and the f...

Captivating. Brilliant. Not One Song Out of Place! This is a fab Album and as much as I have listened to it... it just doesn't wear out... I still get tingles down my spine when I hear it again. 100% Recommended. Good to listen to while soaking in the tub. Supermassive blackhole by muse is my favorite.

Phil Collins : Hits

  Artist: Phil Collins

For better or worse, Phil Collins's "In the Air Tonight" was the "Stairway to Heaven" of the 1980s, winning radio stations' listener polls and even lending its designer threat to an episode of Miami Vice. Hits recalls the days when the Collins name on a disc ensured its immediate embrace by programmers and the public. How you feel about these songs will depend on how you felt about them then; despite the undeniable niceness of "Take Me Home" and "One More Night", they're unlikely to win over anyone who didn't adore them to begin with. Those who cared, though, will no doubt be gladdened to find most of Collins's biggest tunes together on one disc. --Rickey...

I'd heard so many great things about The National just after this record was released, and I vividly remember the first time I heard Mistaken For Strangers on the radio and thinking "I think it'd be wise to take a look at these guys." So since this was the album everyone was raving about it was naturally my first purchase.
But upon listening to it the first time I'd thought I'd made a terrible mistake: it just sounded absolutely impenetrable. Fake Empire just sounded broken and out of time to me, and the only stand out other than Mistaken For Strangers seemed to be Appartment Story - an excellent three and a half minute romp that sounded like it had about half a dozen hooks. So I was incredible disappointed.

But, I preservered and then went and listened to Alligator and it all started to make more sense. Songs that were once anonymous grew into standouts. Squalor Victoria was no longer a futile build towards nothing, the build WAS the song, a beautiful piano hook leading to a simple hook in the style of a toast at a meal. Brainy, Green Gloves and Slow Show were no longer just dreary murmurs but touching tales of desire, affection and anxiety.

Of course upon many listens Matt Beringer's excellent lyrics rose further and further to the forefront of the excellence on show. Slow Show ("You know I dreamed about you; twenty-nine years before I saw you") and Brainy ("You might need me more than you think you will") are prime examples and describe someone heartachingly dependent on someone else but unsure of how to express that.
Ada is my personal favourite though, just for it's simply word-play and how it fits the melody of the song.

This album is definitely one to recommend. However, if you are completely new to The National then you can take one of two strategies with this record: either buy it and stick with it even thought you may not "get it" at first, or start off with either Alligator or High Violet and then return to this record - that way you may be able to appreciate the ideas on show here more immediately.
Either way, this is an essential piece of work.

Rumours

  Artist: Fleetwood Mac

With the pop sense of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks now leading the band, Fleetwood Mac moved completely away from blues and created this homage to love, Southern California-style. Each songwriter makes his or her presence known: Nicks for her dreamy, mystical reveries ("Dreams", "Gold Dust Woman:); Christine McVie for her ultra-catchy slogans ("Don't Stop"); and Buckingham for his deceptively simple pop songs ("Second Hand News", "Go Your Own Way"). "The Chain", written collectively, is the Mac at their most dramatic. But it's the ensemble playing, the elastic rhythms and lush harmonies that transform the material into classic fare. --Rob O'Connor

This Is the Life

  Artist: Amy MacDonald

Amy MacDonald is that proverbial old head on young shoulders, a Scottish singer-songwriter who, despite her tender 19 years, writes songs with the grace, wisdom and proficiency of one with a score more on the clock. As influenced by The Libertines as any venerable old folk hand, the eleven songs on This Is the Life combine a traditional, acoustic folk-rock sound with a youthful spirit and self-assured lyrics that veer between the observational and the confessional. "Poison Prince" is a jagged guitar strut dedicated to some Doherty-like bad boy, a song every bit as pathos-laden as The Libertines at their doomed, romantic best with a closing treatise to find "An upbe...

These Streets

  Artist: Paolo Nutini

19-year old Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini sounds older than his years on his debut album, These Streets. It's not just his careworn, smooth-as-sandpaper voice, either (although, admittedly, it does help). It's more to do with the maturity of the lyrics, and the casual soulfulness of his delivery. "Last Request" is more the work of a vintage Motown singer than a teenager from Paisley, and it's to Nutini's credit that he carries it off with aplomb. And rather like the soul singers of previous generations, he manages to sing without a hint of hypocrisy about his own sexual exploits ("Jenny Don't Be Hasty") while also questioning his girlfriend's fidelity ("A...

Was bought this album as a gift after having received Paolo's second album ' Sunny Side Up' as a gift earlier in the year. Liked the second album but 'These Streets' is even better. Took it on holiday with us and played it non stop. The kids now know all the words. Songs stick with you for days after listening to the CD so be warned!

Greatest Hits

  Artist: Simon & Garfunkel

Simon & Garfunkel have two three-CD box sets collecting their entire career output, one with out-takes and live recordings, but the duo who were among the bestselling acts of the 1960s only recorded five studio albums throughout the entire 1960s! Their studio perfectionism is never better served than here. This greatest hits is simple and to the point, a perfect collection for anyone looking to get the basic idea (and hits) without committing to a more serious relationship. The harmonies, Paul Simon's masterful songwriting, Garfunkel's soaring choirboy voice, are all here. --Rob O'Connor
