Highway to Hell

  Artist: AC/DC

What Highway to Hell has that Back in Black doesn't is Bon Scott, AC / DC's original lead singer who died just months after this album was released. Scott had a rusty, raspy, scream of a voice, like he might break into a coughing fit at any moment. In other words, on crunchy, hook-heavy metal classics like the title track and on "Get It Hot" which is more roadhouse rock than metal, he had the perfect instrument for such wild-living anthems. Too perfect, it turned out. --David Cantwell

This is arguably the best album the band ever produced containing most of their greatest tracks. This from a band that is one of the defining sounds of the heavy metal movement.

The Number of the Beast

  Artist: Iron Maiden

Times might have changed, now--with the advent of new-metal acts like Korn--but throughout the 1980s, a damning generalisation held true: English heavy metal rocked, while the American variant--with a few notable exceptions--sucked. The difference went beyond aesthetics--the Yanks' avowed penchant for big hair and eyeliner--though that was certainly part of it: British metal was essentially working man's food, loosely descended from biker-meets and Northern pubs; whereas, in the States, it was an outgrowth of stadium-rock, which traditionally subordinated substance to spectacle. Plug-ugly, cartoonishly morbid, Iron Maiden were typical of the local effort: emphasising a dr...

This is the best Iron Maiden album I have listened to so far. I have got Piece of Mind, Fear of the Dark, Brave New World and A Matter of Life and Death. It is the album that brought them international notoriety with a new front man Bruce Dickinson. This album is a piece of rock and roll history, a seminal album and hugely influential.

Starting with Invaders, a raucous good starter followed by Children of the Damned a great tune. Then follows The Prisoner inspired by the popular TV series of the time (Bruce Dickinson bellows "I'm not a prisoner I'm a free man!" to good effect). Next is 22 Acacia Avenue which is a bit controversial but still entertaining number about a brothel in the East End of London.

Next is Number of the Beast the title song of the album with a start a bit like Thriller by Michael Jackson and great fun. Then comes Run to the Hills a song about the mistreatment of American Indians in days gone by. Next is Gangland and then Total Eclipse about Sun worship. Then comes Hallowed Be Thy Name which gained them international success as heavy metal gods.

All in all this is an excellent album well worth a fiver for certain!

Back in Black

  Artist: AC/DC

The death of the lead singer would spell the end of most bands. But most bands aren't AC/DC. After Bon Scott's overindulgence in alcohol lead to his undignified end, lead guitarist Angus Young and Co. simply found a singer that sounded exactly the same and carried on. The result: Back In Black, the most successful album of their lengthy career. Like every other AC/DC album, it doesn't deviate from their trademark sounds: loud guitars, basic boogie and vocals that sound like they are being screamed out by a buzzsaw. But never before (or since) have they gotten the formula so consistently right: "You Shook Me All Night Long", "Rock 'N' Roll Ain't Noise Pollution", "H...

This is without doubt one of the best albums I had ever heard when i bought it on vinyl what seems like another lifetime ago when I was but a black t-shirt wearing youth, I don't think they will ever top this album as a band now, but how could you expect them to.

After Bonn Scott they had to pull something out of the bag & this was it, just rocking out as hard as they could for all they were worth, it may be a well worn formula now but I still love it, Brian's lyrics are great, the band are tight and the Angus solo's what can you say but brilliant.

Not going to review any of the tracks, just buy it and enjoy if you even remotely are into rock.

Forget about comparisons, whats been done before, or what might happen in the future. This is a great rock album. You want no frills, heads down, un pc, 70's/80's rockin then this is for you. These guys currently fly the flag for uncomplicated goodtime headbanging. Shure its a bit samey in places but they've have found their niche and they aint givin it up without a fight. You want progression, growth then go listen to Marillion! AC/DC, Status Quo, Whitesnake etc all found their "sounds" and have pretty much stuck to it with great success. Airbourne are a young band with tonnes of energy, and attitude that will keep a smile on the faces of rockers young and old for years to come. On the first album they said "Stand up for Rock n Roll" - they're walkin it like they're talkin it. Go and see them on the tour this month you will not be dissapointed. As for the album its an absolute must have.

Songs For The Deaf

Artist: Queens Of The Stone Age

On Songs for the Deaf, core Queens of the Stone Age members Nick Oliveri and Josh Homme, with the help of like-minded consorts Dave Grohl and Mark Lanegan, balance pure guitar-induced carnage with more complex, though no less aggressive, speed rock that whips by so fast it creates its own breeze. The disc explodes with "You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire", a toxic squall of power chords and now-classic Oliveri death howls. It's here the album's recurring concept/conceit is introduced, as a generic-sounding announcer from LA's "Clone" radio spits out some psychobabble reinforcing the tired if true cliché that commercial radio stinks. Si...

The third Queens of The Stone Age album, Songs for the Deaf, may have been released back in 2002, but it is still unsurpassed. Arguably the best Hard Rock/Metal album ever, the album goes from strengh to strengh, with standout tracks like the catchy "No One Knows" to the moody "The Sky Is Fallin'", there are just so many tracks that stand out. "First It Giveth", "A Song for The Dead", "Hangin' Tree" (honestly not as morbid as it may sound), "Do it Again" and "God Is In The Radio" all awesome foot tappin' head bangin' tracks.

This album is so unlike any other because of the huge range of moods it takes you through. The only album that really has great song after song. No other artist or album comes close. Highly recommended for any rock/metal fan.

I've been an ardent non-supporter of the 'Ponty Hard Boys' for some time having lived within spitting distance of their hometown. I loved 'Shinobi' but felt they'd sold out with the follow-up tracks and gone way too poppy. Boy am I eating my words now....I absolutely adore this album and it's currently looping on my iPod. I love the edgier feel to it...it's not over-produced or too slick sounding. It's raw and energising and although it took a few listens, it's now firmly ensconced in my current playlist.

Sorry 'Ponty Hard Boys' - seems I underestimated you!!
