The Sea [Digipak]

  Artist: Corinne Bailey Rae

One thing more worthy than a truly great album is a truly surprising great album. Corinne Bailey Rae has, with The Sea, delivered a record that almost physically halts you in your tracks when at best you might have expected it to put up as much resistance as a cotton wool bud. Having established herself with an eponymous debut album of dinner party R&B, featuring tracks like "Choux Pastry Heart" and the fluffy, ubiquitous "Put Your Records On", the weight of emotion present on the lingering, bruised falsetto of understated opening track "Are You Here" is quietly overwhelming. The sombre jazz daydream of "I'd Do It All Again" follows next, blossoming wonderfully wit...

I was bought this album as a gift after seeing her live on tele & really liking the new material she performed...its sounded really retro, as yet ive still not heard her debut album but compared to this album? Its now likely to seriously dissapoint me!!! "The Sea" is the best music ive heard this year so far...i really hope she wins a brit for this album cause it takes guts to open up your heart for everybody to scrutinise like this. Its an authentic piece of magic.
The Sea.

Only by the Night

  Artist: Kings of Leon

Already on course to be one of the year's biggest sellers, Only By the Night has sealed Kings of Leon's unlikely position as Britain's favourite American rock band. The Followill brothers (and cousin) have always been tagged as part of a southern rock tradition of family bands such as the Allmans and Lynyrd Skynyrd, a label they vehemently refuted. But the skinny lads certainly looked like a classic rock act, even as they took musical inspiration from indie contemporaries The Strokes and eighties new wave acts such as The Cure and New Order. Only By the Night is effectively a sequel to 2006's terrific Because of the Times, their third record and the f...

The Movie Songbook

  Artist: Sharleen Spiteri

Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 Spiteri Scores Again With MOVIE SONGBOOK!, 2010-03-11
Okay, I'm like every other Texas fan...I've been listening to Sharleen Spiteri rock the house for the last twenty years. I feel that I know her voice well enough to single her out in Grand Central Station! So, I was delighted with her first solo effort, "Melody".

When I heard the news regarding Songbook, I thought, "An album of soundtracks? In a Lady Gaga kinda decade? Wow, what a ballsy chick!" Well, I really don't share Sharleen's love of movie soundtracks but I bought the cd anyway...well, because....that's what fans do.

I can't tell you how happy I am that Ms. Spiteri has the mondo-sized cojones that she does!:) The album is killer! The music is lush and as always, Sharleen's voice is exquisite. HOWEVER, what stole my heart is the range of songs that she choose and how she presents them. This is no ordinary cover album! She puts her own spin and personality into each and every selection. She's coy and tongue-in-cheek with, "Pretty Woman" and "What's New Pussycat?". Something for the girls.:) "If I Can't Have You" is better than the original (by far) and "Many Rivers To Cross" is just beautiful! "God Bless The Child", "This One's From The Heart" and "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" all make me want to pour myself a dry martini (shaken, not stirred) and hang out in a piano bar. But my favorite track is "Sound of Silence". I've always loved that song and once wrote the lyrics in my journal in a moment of teenage angst. Sharleen Spiteri's rendition made me remember that moment in vivid detail. I swear, if I didn't mind poverty, I'd quit my job and follow her tour around the country shouting, "More, MORE!"

Now, don't get me wrong, this isn't an annoying pop album that you shove into the car cd player and bebop on down the road. No, this is a grown-up's album, best enjoyed on surround-sound, sipping a glass of wine with candle-light (lover/bubble-bath optional). Any less of an atmosphere will rob "Movie Songbook" of it's greatest effect! Buy this album...or,trust me...one day you'll think, "This is a PERFECT moment for Songbook! Why didn't I buy it when I had the chance?" :)

PS if you guys in the UK don't appreciate the gem you have in Spiteri, you could always loan her to us in the States! We Yanks know good music when we hear it! ;)

Rated R

  Artist: Rihanna

Forget Rated R, those widely circulated photos of Robyn Rihanna Henty after her assault at the hands of ex-lover Chris Brown were X-rated stuff. All of which adds a certain poignancy to her fourth album, and first release since unwittingly becoming a poster girl for victims of domestic violence--certainly her sadder songs now seem loaded with a previously unsuspected melancholy. The new empowered Rihanna is a saucy, scary minx, dressed up in dramatic fetish gear by German photographer Ellen von Unwerth, and a long long way from the Bajan beauty queen who charmed us with the sunny "Pon De Replay". A hit as huge as "Umbrella", its chart reign longer than a...

I bought this CD with some reservations. I have John's previous albums and love them, but I was a little dissappointed to find that this was yet another album of just covers. I had hoped that it would include at least some original tracks.

It turns out that I should not of worried. This is a really beautiful collection of tracks, some of which were new to me - 'So Close' is just lovely and 'Unusual Way' is a song that I had never heard before, but I can't get it out of my head. They suit John's voice so well!!

Overall, a wonderful CD!! And if you are a fan of John's previous albums, then buy this, it will exceed your expectations.

Ocean Eyes

  Artist: Owl City

Ocean Eyes follows hot on the heels of "Fireflies", a sparkling piece of emo-tinged electronic pop that made Adam Young, a bedroom musician from small-town Minnesota, a chart-topper on both sides of the Atlantic. Critics have noted the similarities of Owl City to past introspective electronica outfits such as Sub Pop signees The Postal Service, but Ocean Eyes is plainly a brighter, more populist spin on the sound, with colourful melodies, vocals tinted with autotune, and emotions writ large.

Yes, it's sentimental stuff-–lyrically, the sort of literate-but-neurotic fare that sounds as informed by the dialogue of articulate indie flicks like 500 Days ...

Only Revolutions

  Artist: Biffy Clyro

Only Revolutions, the fifth long-player from Biffy Clyro, is a far cry from this Ayr trio’s earlier, reliably embittered emissions. Long gone is the abrasive post-grunge that characterised albums like 2002’s The Vertigo Of Bliss, replaced by polished production, uplifting melodies and a grand, orchestral palette. This doesn’t meant Biffy have succumbed to the sort of blanding out that afflicts so many bands that clean up their act, though--indeed, in many ways they’ve become a more complex, idiosyncratic musical force, touting big anthems laced with creative eccentricity. The likes of "The Golden Rule" and "Born On A Horse" take their cue from Mu...

I was a little put off by all the negs appearing on Amazon but since I've followed GA since Vertigo, I just had to give it a go.
Yes, it's a different direction but....since when have GA not changed direction album to album?
I think it's great, easily keeping the new Gorillaz average album off my most listened to spot, at the moment.
Unlike previous GA efforts this doesn't have the same amount of 'filler' tracks, I don't hit Next once. Paper Romance - epic!
You can't go wrong with GA, depending on your mood just choose one of their styles that suits you and dig out the album!

I agree with the other reviewers this is Robbie back to his best. My lovely husband brought me this for Christmas, and I have played it constantly in the car ever since. Normally my children would be begging me to change CD's by now, but even they like it, especically my 9 year old son(a huge Transformers fan) who loves Deceptacon. So it looks like a whole new generation of fans to me!
