Paolo Nutini
19-year old Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini sounds older than his years on his debut album, These Streets. It's not just his careworn, smooth-as-sandpaper voice, either (although, admittedly, it does help). It's more to do with the maturity of the lyrics, and the casual soulfulness of his delivery. "Last Request" is more the work of a vintage Motown singer than a teenager from Paisley, and it's to Nutini's credit that he carries it off with aplomb. And rather like the soul singers of previous generations, he manages to sing without a hint of hypocrisy about his own sexual exploits ("Jenny Don't Be Hasty") while also questioning his girlfriend's fidelity ("A...

Rodrigo Y Gabriela
excellent, 2010-02-18 i bought this after seeing the advert for it and thought i would give them a go, i had heard of them, but only heard small pieces off youtube.
needless to say i was not disappointed, the overall sound from just two guitars is rich and complex, something i wouldn't have thought possibly previously and the technicality of their playing is simply outstanding, as a 1st time listener to them i will definitely keep an eye out for any else they will do

Paul Weller
Weller continues to create., 2010-05-29 After the 'dad rock' years Weller produces a work that maintains his musical evolution, his mastering of song writing and infuses it with a fierce recollection of the anger and motivation of the young 'Jam' Weller. The 'Tamla' inspired 'No Tears To Cry' is simply sublime. A1!

Excellent tunes and lyrics - hat more could you want?, 2010-07-27 I bought Beachcomber's Windowsill by Stornoway unheard on the recommendation of my Barber who is very much in touch with a wide range of decent music. Like many of the best albums, the appeal wasn't instant, it took a couple of listens to really apreciate just how good and unusuall this album is.
Having now watched a few youtube etc videos of the band performing live I realise just how tallented they are. I look forward to seeing them on tour in Manchester later this year.
All the songs are good but I particularly like 'The end of the Movie' 'Fuel Up' and the two singles I saw you blink and Zorbing.

Corinne Bailey Rae
One thing more worthy than a truly great album is a truly surprising great album. Corinne Bailey Rae has, with The Sea, delivered a record that almost physically halts you in your tracks when at best you might have expected it to put up as much resistance as a cotton wool bud. Having established herself with an eponymous debut album of dinner party R&B, featuring tracks like "Choux Pastry Heart" and the fluffy, ubiquitous "Put Your Records On", the weight of emotion present on the lingering, bruised falsetto of understated opening track "Are You Here" is quietly overwhelming. The sombre jazz daydream of "I'd Do It All Again" follows next, blossoming wonderfully wit...
Doesn't disappoint, 2010-04-16 I absolutely LOVE the first album - which is always a worry when buying the second as expectations are so high. This album does not disappoint. The music has evolved, but the general vibe is similar enough for the listener to cope with the transition. If you asked me which is my fave out of the two, I would still say the first, but equally, I love the second, it's still brilliant and I would recommend it to anyone.
