Leonard Cohen
Various Positions was Leonard Cohen's first album of the 1980s, yet was in keeping with the rest of his albums in two important respects: one, it sounded absolutely nothing like anything else anyone else was doing; two, it was a compelling reason for anyone else dealing in songs of love and its loss to wonder why they were bothering. As a lyricist, Cohen has few, if any, peers--he has never been the relentless doom-monger of popular myth, but a wise, warm and frequently very funny chronicler of heartbreak. Cohen, like very few others, has always appreciated that love is at least as much comedy as tragedy. Various Positions contains some of Cohen's best--"Dan...
TIMELESS, 2008-11-01 A great CD and well worth the 4 pounds I spent on it, after seeking high and low in every store here in Germany for it. It was the only CD missing in my Leonard Cohen collection and I regret not having gotten it earlier. Together with Jennifer Warnes and a fairly minimal orchestration Cohen proves once again he doesn't need a WALL OF SOUND to make a great CD.

Leonard Cohen
The two-disc retrospective The Essential Leonard Cohen traces the Canadian bard's musical maturity from poet and novelist who sang a little, to multidimensional artist whose oracular vocals and increasingly rich arrangements are every bit as compelling as his verse. Even when Cohen came to prominence through the 1960s songcraft of "Suzanne" and "Bird on a Wire", the "folksinger" tag never really fit. Later highlights ranging from the deadpan drollery of "Tower of Song" and "Everybody Knows" to the apocalyptic anthemry of "First We Take Manhattan" and "Democracy" suggest that other labels might be more appropriate: cabaret surrealist, spiritual gadfly, sensual proph...
Songs reminding of new attitude towards life and social problems, 2008-12-20 The CDs are interesting to listen, because they remind of the need to look critically towards life and social problems.
The first CD unveils songs of early period of L. Cohen. Mainly, they deal with tragic love and many allusions.
In the second CD the low voice of L. Cohen reminds of social problems and the need to change them...
Listening to these two Cds will give many insights about culture, society, love and the new approach towards social life...

Neil Young
Recorded in Michigan in 1968, Neil Young’s Sugar Mountain concert at Canterbury House was performed during a transitional period for the singer-songwriter. Buffalo Springfield had recently dissolved and the 21-year-old Young was tentatively feeling his way towards a solo career. There are no orchestral embellishments here – it’s literally just Young, his guitar and a steady flow of stories and audience banter. Versions of “Mr Soul” and “Expecting to Fly” are stripped right down to the basics, and Buffalo Springfield tracks like "Broken Arrow" and “Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing&rdqu...
Early Neil Young solo concert, 2008-12-11 Buffalo Springfield could have been a very big band indeed. Nevertheless, due to infighting and Neil Young's continual restlessnness, they became a group lauded only by musos. Hence the slightly nervous and goofy chatter that punctuates this release; Neil Young's future was by no means certain. Indeed his first album would sell poorly and, just like Bob Dylan, would quickly release a magnificent follow up in an attempt to cancel it out.
This concert from 1968 predates that first album and indeed appears to be a very rare early solo venture fresh out of Springfield's security. The chatter shouldn't come as such a surprise, his humour was evident all through Massey Hall though in an albeit more subdued sense. The music is genuinely what counts and here we have such a collection of songs that we are only likely to hear Neil sing live on this cd/dvd and that makes it such an attractive buy.
On The Way Home kicks it off, the same as Massey Hall as it happens. The version here doesn't match up to that by any means, though the follow up Mr Soul is strummed to such a different beat to any I've heard that it immediately pricks one's ears up. The next two songs really raise the stakes though; an acoustic Expecting To Fly (without a doubt my favourite Sprinfield era Neil Young song) which is gorgeous, and a version of Last Trip To Tulsa which is far more urgent and less rambling than the album version.
There follows The Loner (like Mr Soul this is strummed in a quite unique style) and Birds which was eventually released as a piano version on After The Gold Rush. It sounds like it would have sounded at least as good if it had remained a guitar song. Another Springfield song follows (Out Of My Mind). For those unfamiliar with his demos on the Springfield box set, this will come as a revelation.
If I Could Have Her Tonight is followed by the familiar Sugar Mountain. Although previously released its still a beautiful song and its great to hear it in its context. I've Been Waiting For You, one of the better songs on his debut is here stripped down to its bare bones and sounds fantastic. The collection is rounded up by Springfield songs Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing (how wonderful to finally hear Neil's vocals on this one), Broken Arrow (the sound collage of the studio version is again stripped down to just an acoustic accomanpaniment, which seems impossible but he pulls it off with gusto) and also The Old Laughing Lady from his first album.
Overall, this is a compelling listen. I've tried to concentrate on the songs rather than the chatter. These 'raps' are quite charming but don't add anything to the experience other than to inform us that Neil was in a position where the future was a blank page and he was young, inexperienced (in a solo sense) and nervous. But it is such a cracking listen and the songs really hold up. He was clearly something of a songwriting genius early on and his voice is as pure as a mountain stream. The only reason I haven't awarded it 5 stars is because it simply doesn't measure up to Massey Hall 1971. That was so outstanding, a piece of perfection when Neil's star was in the ascendant. This is more an early and momentary glimpse into the shifting nature of Neil Young's muse, a trait that marks him to this day.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant and bluegrass crooner Alison Krauss may not be the likeliest of musical combinations. But on this welcome collaboration album, they work beautifully together, wringing a kind of magic from other people's songs. The key to the album is its versatility. Between them, Krauss and Plant can handle a vast repertoire on their own, and here they take on the lot, from folk laments and country soul to searing blues and upbeat rock & roll. Overseen by Elvis Costello producer T Bone Burnett and backed by high caliber musicians like guitarist Marc Ribot and multi-instrumentalist Mike Seeger, Raising Sand sees the duo create stellar covers of s...
Through The Morning, Through The Night, I want to listen to this album., 2009-01-04 I bought this album because I loved Led Zeppelin and much of Robert Plant's solo work and because it kept being recommended to me by Amazon. I was a little put off at first as I know Alison Krauss is a country singer and it's not a genre of music I am so keen on or familiar with, but this gamble really paid off.
It's a brilliant album. It almost feels as if I shouldn't be listening as it sounds so intimate and gentle between the two of them as they sing, much as Mojo magazine said. The only song I'd heard before buying this was Gone Gone Gone, which was upbeat and catchy. The rest of the album is more mellow and very relaxed and relaxing.
Every track is wonderful and thoroughly easy and enjoyable to listen to. It sounds as if it wouldn't be out of place back in the 1950s, but also as fresh and modern as it actually is, having been released in 2007.
This reminds me a little of Johnny Cash and Neil Young with the more blues/folk take on country music which makes it a bit more mainstream and accessible.

I missed the album in the middle, 2009-01-04 Enya's album contains androids from inside a tape machine. WELL, let me explain. Firstly; yes, this is real. Horrible, nasty articulate word witch Enya has become pregnant with sound and is threatening to catapult her lifeless torso onto a moving spike that exists somewhere on track 5, she is helped by Wazzy Dave.

Kate Rusby
Carol singing and Yorkshire would seem to go hand in hand. Who better to record an album of Christmas carols then, than South Yorkshire’s own Kate Rusby? Regarded as one of the UK’s best folk singers thanks to breathtaking albums like Hourglass, Sleepless and the recent Awkward Annie, Sweet Bells gives us Rusby’s own repertoire of Christmas favourites. She mostly keeps things pared down to voice, guitar and accordion (played by frequent collaborator Andy Cutting), as well as the odd splash of brass from the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. Festive favourites mingle with lesser-known songs like &ldq...
Kate does Christmas - beautifully, 2008-12-31 This is a lovely collection of songs. The potent combination of Kate's melancholy yet uplifting voice, gorgeous melodies and sympathetic arrangements (Kate and brass band - a match made in heaven) results in an experience that stays with you long after you have finished listening. It gets better with each play, and is a worthy addition to Kate's catalogue of beautiful, rich, resonant work.

Laura Marling
Reading-based songstress Laura Marling has been likened to veteran folksters Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. Despite such hyperbolic accolades, her entry into the crowded world of young female singer-songwriters has been remarkably hushed and wonderfully organic. Having started writing songs at the age of 15, Marling's success has been achieved not by shouting, but by whispering her way through the ranks. Perhaps because of her youth--she turned 18 just before releasing this Alas, I Cannot Swim--Marling has an understated yet accomplished manner that just doesn't grate like some of her peers. Plus her songs are good--very good. Backed by imaginative arrangements from ...
Marling has broken - into the big time, 2008-12-30 The first thing to strike you about this album is that it is an absolutely astonishing piece of work for someone who had just turned 18 when it was released. This folky debut album by Ex-Noah & The Whale vocalist Laura Marling is an accomplished, remarkable and mature collection of mostly deep songs performed with artistry and real conviction, largely thanks to Laura's beautifully understated, expressive and distinctive vocals. Songs of love, longing, death, family relationships and disturbed minds are all performed in a way which make them a powerfully emotive listening experience and also often strangely uplifting, regardless of the subject matter.
Although this album isn't quite a masterpiece, it is very close to greatness. There are some absolute gems of songs here and it is very clear that the vastly talented Marling has a very bright future indeed. 'Ghosts', which is like a mini-novel within a song set to acoustic guitar and chimes, is a beautiful introduction to the album. 'Tap At My Window' is a beautiful composition, like the songwriting lovechild of Joni Mitchell and Aimee Mann. 'You're No God' is like a more delicate, folky Arcade Fire composition, but is equally as powerful as some of their best work. 'My Manic And I' is slice of dark, stirring brilliance, utilising light and shade, both lyrically and musically, to perfection. Those are my personal favourites, but virtually everything on this album is at least very good, if not excellent.
The always interesting and pleasingly varied 'Alas I Cannot Swim' is a real slow-burner of an album and although some songs appear perhaps a little unremarkable during the first couple of listens, the more you hear this release, the greater the chance of you appreciating the "lesser" songs and gaining full enjoyment and appreciation of this piece of work. Once you fully grasp the full meaning of the lyrics, the way the music is tied so closely to the words and allow the subtleties and complexities of this album to sink in, you'll probably love this album as much as I do.
