Contra

  Artist: Vampire Weekend

You're the only band in the world to have moulded the fruity shimmering of sun-baked African pop with the leather-jacketed cool of 21st century New York rock 'n' roll, delivered it with the diligence of first-class honours students with tidy haircuts, and become a universally-lauded if unlikely international sensation as a result. You're not about to change your spots now, are you. It should come as no surprise therefore that with Contra, Vampire Weekend have delivered another full length album packed full with the same near-flawless, feather-weight indie with occasional knock-out tendencies as their eponymous first. What may be surprising though is how different a...

I bought this album 3 days ago having loved the first one. I actually heard the track "Diplomat's Son" whilst in a changing room in Next. I hadn't heard it before, but immediately recognised it as Vampire Weekend and thought it must be a new album so went straight out and bought it. On first hearing, I thought the album not as good as the first, but second and subsequent hearings later I absolutely love it too - in fact my next door neighbour is probably sick of hearing it through the walls. The African feel of the music is the stuff you have to dance round the room to - thankfully with only the dog as witness. When the album comes to an end you just feel uplifted and have to play it again. After a long winter, anything that makes you feel happy and bright with a promise of the summer to come (we hope) can't be a bad thing. I could write a load of intelligent stuff about the lyrics, musicianship etc, but so many others have done that already. If you liked the first album, you'll love this and if you don't have either, buy both.

Lungs

  Artist: Florence + The Machine

Already the year’s most hyped new artist--not only first in the BBC’s famously unreliable poll of new talent and recipient of a special Brit award devised just for her--Florence Welsh has a lot to live up to, and thankfully the artfully titled and sleeved Lungs justifies the investment. The singles are undeniably the standouts. The impressive "Dog Days Are Over", neurotic and fierce, and the slightly more reserved follow-up "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" lead her debut collection, sometimes overshadowing her other material. Yet the extremes of "Kiss With A Fist", a jokey celebration of mutual domestic violence and noisy guitars that shamelessly steals its melod...

The Resistance

  Artist: Muse

It's not really about the music anymore, is it. It's about the breadth and height of everything Muse do. It's about leaving a jet-stream in the sky. Any tune with a trajectory lower than the cosmos is presumably discarded, with arrangements generally sounding as expensive as battleships (intergalactic battleships, that is). Of course the music is not exactly incidental either; Muse's full-on fifth album The Resistance is packed hard with virtuoso musicianship, rigorous instrumental freak-outs and harmonies beamed between dimensions. It's simply what they do now, no matter how ridiculous it may seem. Long gone are the days of the feisty yet formal English post-grunge band ...

Im a massive Muse fan. Huge in fact. I try and see them everytime they tour. You would think this would be quite boring to see teh same band over and over again but i demand to meet the person who thinks New Born live is boring and old hat. From Showbiz to The Resistance, every album (if we do out of 10) easily scores between 9 and 10, and in the case of Origin Of Symmetry 11. I have so much respect for the music Muse make, i bought the CD and not the download just so i can have the CD case pride of place in my CD collection. I have now decided only to reserve CD purchases for the truly great albums and not just the general release rubbish with 1 or 2 decent songs on the album.

Horror!!!!!!Disgust!!!!!!!!Disbelief!!!!!! This cant be!!!I have listened to the whole album and i cant stand it! Its awful. I feel let down. This is Queen 2010!

You cant blame me for saying these things as the first listen was horrendous on my ears and i was some what swayed but other reviews from NME and amazon. I put the CD in a draw for a week. How did Muse get it so wrong? In fact i got it wrong. I got it horrendously wrong and after saying these terrible things about Muse, I wondered would it ever forgive me? I was driving to work one morning and United States Of Eurasia came on the ipod at Random. That was back in January and so far i have listened to the album a good 100 times.

It is a total vear of route for Muse, synths, pop sounding at times, it is a bit queen influenced (especially United States of Eurasia) and i can personally hear the eurythmics at times. All these combined makes for a worth while experience. The symphony (exogenesis) is basic in its composistion and very familiar sounding, but i love the way it swoops during the strings. The only song i had a major issue with was Guiding Light. The first lyric kept making me cringe and i just couldnt enjoy the song, which has never happened. it reminded me of Invincible from Black Holes and Revelations which only just survived due to its finale.

This is a very good record, it has some amazing guitar rifts and ludicrous pomposity. The Resistance and MK Ultra are my personal favourites, along with Undisclosed Desire A grower most certainly and possibly the most difficult Muse album to fully appreciate. But you will appreciate it, it simply takes a bit more of a listen. The best time to listen to it is when walking or driving. Totally captivating

I'm fairly new to Folk rock, being a mostly hard rock, posthardcore, grungey sort of person normally. Got hooked on Band of horses while playing GTAIV and have found all sorts of great bands via the wonder of last fm. I have to say that this album is one of my all time favorites, ever. I absolutley love it. If you in any way like Band of horses, Bon Iver, Fleet foxes, Iron and Wine etc then just buy it. Seriously I would be very surprised if you regretted it, if you do I'll make sure my wife spanks me for recommending it and causing dissapointment.

NEWSOM, AS USUAL, PUTS HER UNIQUE SPIN ON MUSIC INTERPRETATION. THIS ALBUM HAS BEEN ON MY PLAYER FOR 2 DAYS NOW AND IS GETTING BETTER WITH EVERY LISTEN, A PURE JOY.
THERE ARE OBVIOUS SIMILARITIES WITH KATE BUSH BUT THAT IS A REALLY GOOD THING, NEWSOM'S HARP PLAYING AND VOCAL DEPTH HAVE HINTS OF CLASSICAL ARRANGEMNTS AT THE SAME TIME IT'S A VERY COMTEMPORARY ALTERNATIVE FOLK SOUND. THIS ALBUM IS SURE TO GIVE ALL LISTENERS MANY, MANY MOMENTS OF BEAUTY AND CHILL AT THE SAME TIME.
AS THE ALBUM TITLE SUGGESTS - HAVE ONE ON ME - TREAT YOURSELF.

Only Revolutions

  Artist: Biffy Clyro

Only Revolutions, the fifth long-player from Biffy Clyro, is a far cry from this Ayr trio’s earlier, reliably embittered emissions. Long gone is the abrasive post-grunge that characterised albums like 2002’s The Vertigo Of Bliss, replaced by polished production, uplifting melodies and a grand, orchestral palette. This doesn’t meant Biffy have succumbed to the sort of blanding out that afflicts so many bands that clean up their act, though--indeed, in many ways they’ve become a more complex, idiosyncratic musical force, touting big anthems laced with creative eccentricity. The likes of "The Golden Rule" and "Born On A Horse" take their cue from Mu...

Perfect for reinvigorating that jaded palate. Everyone once in a while someone comes up with a new way of jumbling their influences. This sounds like the future. Sure, it will be old hat in a year, but right now, that mix of new wave and dubstep aches with the feel of today's pavements

Only by the Night

  Artist: Kings of Leon

Already on course to be one of the year's biggest sellers, Only By the Night has sealed Kings of Leon's unlikely position as Britain's favourite American rock band. The Followill brothers (and cousin) have always been tagged as part of a southern rock tradition of family bands such as the Allmans and Lynyrd Skynyrd, a label they vehemently refuted. But the skinny lads certainly looked like a classic rock act, even as they took musical inspiration from indie contemporaries The Strokes and eighties new wave acts such as The Cure and New Order. Only By the Night is effectively a sequel to 2006's terrific Because of the Times, their third record and the f...

West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum

  Artist: Kasabian

Kasabian arrived with a bang and a half early this century, brandishing a slew of ever more dynamite singles and a rigorously assembled debut album that straddled dancefloors and festival fields with monumental ease and a glint in its bloodshot eyes. It was all very post-Xtrmntr, whilst avoiding much of the seriousness that could have entailed. Whether anyone expected them to chase Oasis’ coat-tails with such keenness is by the by now; they have since been ordained as an anthemic rock colossus of the UK rock scene. That has almost certainly gone to their heads and as years and albums pass they move further away from their original chemical reaction and into att...

The first Kasabian album was a classic (one of the best albums of the last decade), but the (difficult) 2nd one "Empire" was a disappointment. This album is a return to the good times and is superb. "Where did all the love go" has got to be one of the best and most catchy songs in recent years. This collection of genius is highly recommended for fans and new-comers alike.

Ocean Eyes

  Artist: Owl City

Ocean Eyes follows hot on the heels of "Fireflies", a sparkling piece of emo-tinged electronic pop that made Adam Young, a bedroom musician from small-town Minnesota, a chart-topper on both sides of the Atlantic. Critics have noted the similarities of Owl City to past introspective electronica outfits such as Sub Pop signees The Postal Service, but Ocean Eyes is plainly a brighter, more populist spin on the sound, with colourful melodies, vocals tinted with autotune, and emotions writ large.

Yes, it's sentimental stuff-–lyrically, the sort of literate-but-neurotic fare that sounds as informed by the dialogue of articulate indie flicks like 500 Days ...
