Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House, Ann Arbor Mi Nov 1968/+Dvda

  Artist: Neil Young

Recorded in Michigan in 1968, Neil Young’s Sugar Mountain concert at Canterbury House was performed during a transitional period for the singer-songwriter. Buffalo Springfield had recently dissolved and the 21-year-old Young was tentatively feeling his way towards a solo career. There are no orchestral embellishments here – it’s literally just Young, his guitar and a steady flow of stories and audience banter. Versions of “Mr Soul” and “Expecting to Fly” are stripped right down to the basics, and Buffalo Springfield tracks like "Broken Arrow" and “Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing&rdqu...

Buffalo Springfield could have been a very big band indeed. Nevertheless, due to infighting and Neil Young's continual restlessnness, they became a group lauded only by musos. Hence the slightly nervous and goofy chatter that punctuates this release; Neil Young's future was by no means certain. Indeed his first album would sell poorly and, just like Bob Dylan, would quickly release a magnificent follow up in an attempt to cancel it out.
This concert from 1968 predates that first album and indeed appears to be a very rare early solo venture fresh out of Springfield's security. The chatter shouldn't come as such a surprise, his humour was evident all through Massey Hall though in an albeit more subdued sense. The music is genuinely what counts and here we have such a collection of songs that we are only likely to hear Neil sing live on this cd/dvd and that makes it such an attractive buy.
On The Way Home kicks it off, the same as Massey Hall as it happens. The version here doesn't match up to that by any means, though the follow up Mr Soul is strummed to such a different beat to any I've heard that it immediately pricks one's ears up. The next two songs really raise the stakes though; an acoustic Expecting To Fly (without a doubt my favourite Sprinfield era Neil Young song) which is gorgeous, and a version of Last Trip To Tulsa which is far more urgent and less rambling than the album version.
There follows The Loner (like Mr Soul this is strummed in a quite unique style) and Birds which was eventually released as a piano version on After The Gold Rush. It sounds like it would have sounded at least as good if it had remained a guitar song. Another Springfield song follows (Out Of My Mind). For those unfamiliar with his demos on the Springfield box set, this will come as a revelation.
If I Could Have Her Tonight is followed by the familiar Sugar Mountain. Although previously released its still a beautiful song and its great to hear it in its context. I've Been Waiting For You, one of the better songs on his debut is here stripped down to its bare bones and sounds fantastic. The collection is rounded up by Springfield songs Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing (how wonderful to finally hear Neil's vocals on this one), Broken Arrow (the sound collage of the studio version is again stripped down to just an acoustic accomanpaniment, which seems impossible but he pulls it off with gusto) and also The Old Laughing Lady from his first album.
Overall, this is a compelling listen. I've tried to concentrate on the songs rather than the chatter. These 'raps' are quite charming but don't add anything to the experience other than to inform us that Neil was in a position where the future was a blank page and he was young, inexperienced (in a solo sense) and nervous. But it is such a cracking listen and the songs really hold up. He was clearly something of a songwriting genius early on and his voice is as pure as a mountain stream. The only reason I haven't awarded it 5 stars is because it simply doesn't measure up to Massey Hall 1971. That was so outstanding, a piece of perfection when Neil's star was in the ascendant. This is more an early and momentary glimpse into the shifting nature of Neil Young's muse, a trait that marks him to this day.

Aha Shake Heartbreak

  Artist: Kings Of Leon

Typecast them as rootin', tootin' cowboy rockers if you will, but Aha Shake Heartbreak shows the Kings Of Leon have more to offer than beardy rock classicism. Indeed, for all the talk of Neil Young or Creedence Clearwater Revival, the outfit this Nashville-based band of brothers (and one cousin) resembles most is New York new-wavers The Strokes: it's there in Nathan Followill's minimal, metronomic drum rhythms, there in Matthew Followill's spare guitar lines, and there in frontman Caleb Followill's insouciant, beer-chugging drawl.

That said, brother Caleb's lyrical concerns are strictly of the old school: the likes of "Taper Jean Girl" and "Milk" deal with wine,...

best of their 4 albums.
their most consistent, it really sounds like they are on fire and inspired.
raw rock at its best a-la 70's ac/dc or credence clearwater revival but not mere copyists, they have their own very unique twist on things.
better than the 1st album as this is more cohesive as the 1st was a mix of an earlier e.p and some new songs and as a result sounds a bit disjointed, i doubt they will ever be this good again as their next 2 albums are lacking in both fire and inspiration.

Youth and Young Manhood

  Artist: Kings Of Leon

Kings of Leon are four members of the Followill family, three brothers and a cousin. The title Youth & Young Manhood is an accurate summary of their places in life--the oldest member, drummer Nathan Followill, is 23, while the youngest, bass player Jared Followill, is just 16. The brothers had a childhood that was both eccentric and peripatetic, living out of a car while their preacher father toured the southern United States, and have most recently been living in Nashville; they don't appear, judging by this startlingly assured debut, to have been unduly traumatised by either experience.

Kings of Leon, up to and including their haircuts and moustaches, are ste...

I've been re-listening to this lately, a lot. While I love all their work (Aha Shake Heartbreak is a very underrated album) this album is the pick of the bunch in so many ways. It's so raw yet so visceral at the same time, repeated listening rewards with new discoveries.

Sure, their later stuff is great but I was a bit underwhelmed with 'Only by the night' - I just think they've lost something in bringing their sound so far, and in listening to this after their latest stuff the clarity of progression is huge. I guess they had to move on but maybe they lost something when they dropped the spit and sawdust rock for stadium filling anthems.

Buy this, it's a total classic.

I Started Out With Nothin' and I Still Got Most of It Left

  Artist: Seasick Steve

The most unlikely of stars, sixty-something Seasick Steve Wold might have started out with nothin', but these days he can headline the Royal Albert Hall. The second solo album from the much travelled bluesman (and, let's not forget, studio owner--he didn't suddenly step off a boxcar with a demo tape in hand--refines the sound that made 2006's Dog House Music so instantly appealing. Guests include Ruby Turner, KT Tunstall (playing rather than singing) and Nick Cave and Grinderman--Cave and Steve duet on their collaboration "Just Like a King". The title track, "Started out With Nothin'", is as catchy as it is wise, "One True" laments Steve's late dog ("my one true fr...

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

  Artist: Various Artists

Joel and Ethan Coen have long established themselves as film stylists without peer: from Blood Simple to Fargo, their movies have never been less than fascinating, and there has never been any question that their films could not have been made by anyone else. In T-Bone Burnett, the producer of the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou?, they have finally met their match: Burnett's work in assembling a collection of pieces for the Depression-set film is as skilled and entrancing as the film itself.

Despite the presence of Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss and bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley, the stars here are the songs themselves, a hos...

Meet Glen Campbell

  Artist: Glen Campbell

The concept behind Meet Glen Campbell is so obvious it's a surprise that no one had thought of doing it before. Once Brian Wilson's touring replacement in the Beach Boys, then a megastar with his country inflected orchestral pop productions in the late sixties and early seventies, Glen Campbell has seen it all. Now in his seventies, his star has faded since his collaborations with young songwriter Jimmy Webb ruled the charts, but he remains a fine singer and a deft guitarist still. Taking ten recent songs by the likes of Tom Petty, Travis, Foo Fighters and even Green Day, and dressing them up in the expansive arrangements he's still remembered for effectively makes...
Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 Brilliant update of country-pop legend, 2008-12-18
In contrast to Johnny Cash's stark reinvention at the hands of Rick Rubin on the American Recordings series, the cheekily titled Meet Glen Campbell sets out to simply reintroduce a legendary artist to contemporary audiences. Co-producers Julian Raymond and Howard Willing are quite obviously steeped in Campbell's classic hits and sound, and rather than reframing him in something stark or contrasting, they find relevancy in contemporary material and beautifully constructed arrangements that blend guitars, bass, drums, banjo, mandolin and strings. The layered instruments push the songs forward with soaring strings, shuffling country-pop rhythms, and background washes that give this release an updated sound without trying to completely recast its star. Campbell's voice is mixed further forward than on many of his classic hits, and he sounds remarkably at home atop non-Nashville production that perfectly blends acoustic and electric instruments. This is pop music in the vein of Campbell's iconic recordings of Jimmy Webb's songs, mixing craft and roots for the broadly accepting top-40 of four decades past.

The album's ten tracks are carefully selected from the catalogs of well-known modern pop artists, and adapted with flourishes of Campbell's earlier work. The rolling rhythm of "Gentle on My Mind," for example, is added to a cover of Tom Petty's redemptive "Angel Dream," and the dramatic strings introducing the Foo Fighters' "Times Like These" play upon the original opening of "Wichita Lineman." Among the album's highlights is a cover of Jackson Browne's "These Days," on which Campbell seems to reflect wearily on the chaos of his earlier years, and finds a modicum of satisfaction in simply having lived through it all. The arrangement of strings and acoustic guitars takes a cue from Nico's 1967 version, but Campbell's lengthy career and public life resonate deeply with the lyrics. The Replacements' "Sadly Beautiful" is arranged with strings in place of the original volume-controlled guitar counterpoint, and `70s soft-rock fans will recognize the underlying guitar vibrato from Bread's "If." Campbell's shell-shocked reading of Paul Westerberg's sorrowful lyrics is supported by layers of acoustic guitar, strings, keyboards and backing vocals. Even the Velvet Underground's "Jesus" is made to reflect Campbell's tumultuous history, recast from a libertine's consideration to an elder statesman's plea.

If there's a weakness to the album, it's the lack of new material. The all-covers format leaves listeners to compare Campbell's versions to the originals, rather than providing an opportunity to introduce definitive interpretations. Thankfully, many of the selections are pulled from albums rather than hit singles, and avoid the novelty of a mature artist trying to look hip. Even when Campbell does remake an icon, such as Tom Petty's "Walls" or Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," the songs are given new life from Campbell's classic sound. "Walls" opens with the sort of orchestral attack that cued the vocal of "Galveston" and "Good Riddance" is turned into a shuffle that's equal parts country and modern pop. Campbell's return finds his skills as a vocal interpreter undimmed, and his producers amplify his native talent with cannily picked songs and deftly arranged productions. Dog House Music

  Artist: Seasick Steve

Seasick Steve is Steve Wold, a moustachioed American bluesman who, on Dog House Music, plays American roots music with the tight-belt economy and authentic spirit of the genre's originators (there's a lineage here, too - Steve was taught his first chords by Delta bluesman KC Douglas). A long-term street-dweller, Wold's instrumentation is simplistic in the extreme: a three-stringed trance guitar, a slide instrument known as 'the one-stringed diddy-bo', and the Mississippi Drum Machine, a wooden box that provides the most rudimentary percussion. In the true blues spirit, Seasick Steve sings his life. For an autobiography of sorts, head for 'Dog House Boogie', a phleg...

The Very Best of Roy Orbison

  Artist: Roy Orbison

Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 Career Spanning Orbison, 2007-08-22
No one should need reminding that Roy Orbison possessed the ultimate voice in conveying paranoia, tortured emotions and fatalism in his songs so, at first sight, it is surprising that yet another compilation is needed.

However, take another look. This release contains eleven of his sixteen essential Monument hits. Any album containing such treasures as Only The Lonely, Falling, It's Over, Blue Angel, Pretty Woman and Cryin' must rate as a 5* star album on the strength of those tracks alone.

However, unlike many other compilation albums, this release has only one of his Sun recordings which is of no consequence since he was scarcely a rock 'n' roller anyway! Instead, the CD has three magical tracks from his last and critically underrated album, the 1989 release, Mystery Girl. An added bonus is his warm and tender duet with Emmylou Harris, That Loving You Feelin' Again, from the movie Roadie plus some of his MGM hits including Too Soon To Know and Lana.

Of course, there are expensive box sets and compilations with fifty plus tracks for the completists and the obsessed and purists might quibble at the selections (In Dreams is the 1985 version). But this is a career spanning retrospective and for those who want a concise overview of one of the great dramatic balladeers of the 20th century - and at a budget price - this album is hard to beat. Recommended.
