Recorded in June 2001, Cyrus Chestnut's Soul Food is unquestionably the young pianist's best CD to date. He is joined by bassist Christian McBride and Lewis Nash on drums, and they treat us to four stirring trio performances: the perennial "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "Coming Through the Rye" are particularly imaginative and cogent. Elsewhere they form a Rolls-Royce rhythm section for three sextet tracks starring trumpeter Marcus Printup, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and James Carter's tenor sax; three quartet cuts featuring vibist Stefan Harris; and altoist Gary Bartz is added for the concluding "Goodnight". Such names almost guarantee success; even better news is that this all-star assemblage plays out of their skins, clearly revelling in both the material and the company. The sextet's reading of the title track is an irresistibly funky knockout, as is their "Brother Hawky Hawk"; no less inspiring in more reflective vein are the Harris-quartet's renditions of "In the Underground" and the delicious "Brother with the Mint Green Vine". A good deal of contemporary modern jazz can seem both effortful and stale, but neither censure applies here: this is good-time music at its most joyous, and full of edifying matter as well.
