Amazon.co.uk Review This multi-racial instrumental ensemble, Booker T & The MGs, holds a pivotal position in the history of soul. As well as holding the fort as the Stax/Atlantic house band for an array of soul legends including Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and Wilson Pickett, they also co-penned a clutch of soul classics, such as "Dock of The Bay", "Soul Man", "Midnight Hour" and "Knock On Wood", whilst finding time to record in their own right. Originally released in 1969 this album consists of a dozen Motown, Beatle and pop covers, plus the inclusion of a multimedia track which includes video, biography and pictures. The set's opening salvo is the MG's scintillating take on Cliff Noble & Co's "The Horse", a rendition that's every bit as righteously rousing as Cliff's stomping original. Elsewhere, the chaps' Stax-styled chops inject the likes of "Mrs Robinson" and "This Guy's In Love With You" with Memphis funk. --Chris King
