As its foreboding name might suggest, Under The Iron Sea finds Sussex balladeers Keane setting sail for somewhat darker waters. Prompted by their involvement in Live8 and Make Poverty History, continuing conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, and personal strife that saw the band's friendship stretched to breaking point, tracks like "Is It Any Wonder?" and "A Bad Dream" find choirboy-voiced vocalist Tom Chaplin giving voice to a generation distrustful of its leaders, upset by war and discord, but unsure of all the answers. Songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley matches this bleaker spirit with a darker sound, swapping his trademarked piano for synthesiser that, on mid-album instrume...
a personal Favourite , 2008-07-07 having heard their first album, i felt this one is going to be a bit better, and though some lyrics make no sense, i liked it a lot, infact, i loved it. for while, it was i listened to, and still not tired of it. i think their standard is fairly high and i have to say, it was all i expected from keane. great stuff, highly recommended if you like that sort of music.

Would it be outlandish to suggest that wholesome rugby-shouldered ruddy-faced English piano-pop boys Keane have spent the best part of their two-album career fanning the impression that they exist somewhere between an easy Mothers' Day gift and the album it's ok to give your girlfriend back when you split up, just in order to blow everyone out of the water like 80s neon-pop commandos with the boldness of their third? You know, utilising the element of surprise? Probably, but even though their debut (Hopes & Fears) and its follow up (Under the Iron Sea) may have been broader creative successes than many care to admit, it is true that Perfect Symmetry i...

Keane blend old and new to bring us something irresistable, 2008-10-20 Barcode: 0602517887732
Like much of Keane's great new album Perfect Symmetry, The Lovers Are Losing presents an interesting middle ground. Blending the piano balladry of their 1st album with the electronic flourishes that they touched on in their 2nd album, they mix all this together into an irresistable number that, while not as quirky or striking as taster single Spiralling, is just as instant and catchy.
It is here that Keane's success stems from - The Lovers Are Losing representing the heart of the band's pop sensibilities wrapped up in lush production that emphasises the 80's feel of their new material that so many reviews have commented on. It is a sound that suits the band well and Tom's vocals on top-form on this single, all round making for a great single and definite highlight to the new album.
We also get a fantastic b-side on this CD in the form of 'Time To Go', relatively stripped back compared to the a-side, with just a piano and acoustic guitar accompanying Tom's vocal. It's a strong track though and holds instant appeal.
[This CD single comes in a digipak style package using eco-friendly materials]

A really great album, 2008-08-07 Why hasn't anyone rated this album when Hopes & Fears has hundreds of ratings? If you liked Hopes and Fears you probably have this one and you already know that its even better. Hard to believe I know. If you haven't got this album in your collection then you are missing out on a really great album. I must have listened to it 100 times over the past year and it never fails to please.

Awesome Album again from Keane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, 2009-01-02 How are this Band's albums not permanently number 1 in the album charts.
Have they ever produced 1 bad song yet in 3 albums. I don't think so.
The dreamy melodic tunes and the emotional lyrics that on Song 6 You Don't See Me can make a grown man cry (well, it did me).
All songs are written with a 'human magic' that you can connect with and not many writers can achieve this.
I have been waiting for over 2 years for the release of this album, but it was so worth waiting for. I don't think any other band gets close to them at the moment.
If you are a 30 something like me (36) and loved 80's synthy music that has been brought into the 21st century then all 3 of Keane's albums should be part of your collection.
I cannot be more impressed by KEANE, and they are also great live, so is there anyone better around at the minute. I don't think so.

It's perhaps inevitable that Keane's debut album, Hopes and Fears, will draw numerous comparisons to Coldplay. Like them, Keane were discovered by indie label Fierce Panda, who released a single ("Everybody's Changing"). And, like Coldplay, Keane also do a fine trade in catchy and heartfelt indie-pop, all bruised verses and soaring choruses. But though their sound is sure to please fans of Coldplay and Travis, the reality is that Keane manage to sound that little bit more delicate. This could be down to the band's relatively unusual make-up: rather than guitars, the trio use a piano. At its best, Hopes and Fears is reminiscent of Bends-era Radiohea...
Still brilliant, 2008-10-29 Sometimes it is relevant to review an album after a period of time and in the light of subsequent albums. This one really does still sound good and I suggest it is still played regularly.Whilst the 2nd and 3rd albums are good, this one is still the gold standard.
