Adiemus
Adiemus IV is going to make a lot of people very happy, keeping the essential Adiemus approach which has proved phenomenally popular over the three previous Adiemus releases from Karl Jenkin's hybrid folk/classical/new age ensemble. However, the subtitle "The Eternal Knot" refers to the fact that some of this music was originally written for the Scottish television series, The Celts and this aspect is going to draw inevitable comparisons with Riverdance. Play the opening track, "Cú Chullain", and there is just no getting away from it (nor is there any possibility of keeping the feet still), the thunderous, exhilarating Irish sound is irrefutab...

Oddly enough, newcomers to the Adiemus experience could do far worse than start here and work backwards. Unlike its predecessors, this volume of new music for orchestra-plus-quasi-early-music-stroke-ethnic-vocals purports to be based on a kind of potted history of dance music (that's s in Grove rather than groove), with the resulting rhythmic diversity enlivening the music no end. However, what seems to have escaped even the composer (at least if his po-faced booklet notes are anything to go by) is the unassailable fact that dance has always had an enormous influence on the style and form of popular music, which has in turn informed this music in some...

Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace is a departure from his Adiemus recordings into the more conventional territory of large-scale choral and orchestral writing, though his customary passion for mixing languages remains in full force with texts in English, Latin and French. Jenkins has said that The Armed Man was inspired by the "L'Homme armé" masses which were popular in the 16th century, and he makes this debt clear with passages written in a neat pastiche of Palestrina-style renaissance polyphony. There are also echoes of earlier and later styles, including plainchant, medieval ballads, James Barry-style horn writing (think Goldfinger...

If you have seen a Delta Airlines television commercial that features an African-sounding, childlike choral chant in its soundtrack, you have experienced the title track from Songs of Sanctuary. Adiemus is largely the brainchild of former Soft Machine keyboardist Karl Jenkins, with participation from independent vocalist Miriam Stockley, a native of South Africa; the London Philharmonic Orchestra (which Jenkins conducts on this album) and others. The music of Adiemus will prompt inevitable comparisons to acts such as Dead Can Dance, Enigma and Deep Forest. In the album's liner notes, Jenkins describes the album as "an extended choral-type work based on the European...
