The best album I've never heard of!, 2010-07-29 Where has the world been hiding Joe Bonamassa? The only reason I even found this album is that it was included in the list of 'You Might Like This' selections on the page I visited to pick up a replacement copy of a Joe Walsh album.
As I know absolutely nothing about him, I won't embarrass myself by going in too deeply in this review, however I would say to anyone out there who is looking to expand their guitar-player cd lists with something new, I would not hesitate to recommend this album.
As a long (long) time fan of slide guitar players, I enjoy everything from Southern Rock to Joe Walsh and the closest I can get for those who want a 'who does it sound like' sound-bite, I would say that they should imagine a drunken love-child of Molly Hatchet and John Martyn and you may just get close...and if you add in the relatives, Joe Satriani, Neil Young and Chris Whitley, you will really begin to see the lineage.
The energy levels which pour from his fingers as he plays and the power in his voice are remarkable and the only thing that bothers me at all is the fact that I now have to go search out and buy everything else he has done and get reading-up on Wikipedia.
Sorry, I have to go now, as it's time to pour a shot of bourbon and press 'play' again...

In the last nine years, bluesman Joe Bonamassa has released no less than six studio and two live albums. The Ballad of John Henry is his seventh proper album, and the follow-up to 2007’s acclaimed Sloe Gin. As on previous outings, The Ballad of John Henry sees the singer deliver a dynamite blast of blues-influenced rock, buoying the genre's acoustic tendencies with searing electric guitar riffs and gritty vocals. Seven of the 12 tracks here are written by Bonamassa, ranging from the blistering title track--a story of the eternal American folk legend--to the swaying, loping, tough-nosed “Last Kiss”. The songs are all suitably impressive, as...
Review the Ballard of John Henry, 2010-07-26 I went to see this guy recently and I was totally blown away by his talent. If you like bluesy rock you will love this album some does sound a bit samey but generally he is very good. I will be buying more of his work having bought this and hearing him live.

Guitar hero Bonamassa may have dropped the "Smokin'" prefix from his performing name that he carried as a teenager, but he still specialises in superheated fret work. And for him, the faster it is, the better. Bonamassa sought to showcase the "heavier side of blues" on his fourth studio recording, emphasizing the approach used by the classic English blues-rockers. And he does just that with a hyperactive "Travellin' South" that Ten Years After would have been proud to claim and a hard-edged remake of the B.B. King hit "Never Make Your Move Too Soon". The title track, a Blind Faith favourite, is transformed into a frenetic live jam while Lowell Fulson's "Reconsider Baby", ...
Brilliant Bonamassa, 2009-02-06 Just brilliant - Never Make Your Move Too Soon is great to start with, then Reconsider Baby & When She Dances & Had To Cry Today are my favorites on here but I really like all the others too - no skipping a track on a Joe Bonamassa album - they are all great.

In the liner notes of Sloe Gin, emerging guitar great Joe Bonamassa explains that one of his objectives is to experiment with acoustic elements he first encountered while listening to Rod Stewart's earliest work. "I think the heavy blues and acoustic mix well together," he writes, and the inviting variety of the disc's 11 tracks--from the rousing electric rave-up of the title track to the closing, tabla-propelled acoustic instrumental--persuasively underscores his point. Bonamassa is a major talent with a growing following, and as his fan base inevitably expands it may become difficult for him to keep everyone happy. Hardcore blues devotees no doubt will yearn for ...
Don't look any further!, 2009-12-14 Have you ever bought an album and found that every track on it is of a consistently superlative quality?
Me neither!
That was, until I bought Sloe Gin by Joe Bonamassa!
Not only is it the best album I've bought this year, it's one of the best albums I've EVER bought (in over fifty years of collecting all types of music)!
The album is polished and professional and highlights a great developing talent. Bonamassa's playing is exciting and intense, in a way that I've not heard since we lost SRV.
This is a very gifted musician, who plays with the feel and the soul of someone who has many years of performing experience, not some young guitar slinger trying to make a name. Joe Bonamassa will be revered and remembered (and will still be making great music) long after "the fast twiddlers" have been forgotten.
The vocals are superb, as well! He has a soulful voice reminiscent, at times, of a young Paul Rodgers but at the same time it is a sound all his own and is very recognisable as such.
There is a range of musical styles, covering rock and blues and the overdriven sound he gets from his guitar, on Dirt In My Pocket is worth the price of the album alone!
There is some beautiful acoustic work on the album as well, as good as you'll get and much better, technically than many current guitarists (as long as we take maestro Tommy Emmanuel out of the equation).
Right - stop wasting time reading my review - go and buy the album and find out why I'm so impressed with it!

Green Shoots of a Blues Great, 2010-07-24 I got in to Joe Bonamassa on the release of Sloe Gin and have become a massive fan of his since. I have now delved into his back catalogue and picked up, amongst others A New Day Yesterday. An apt title as I think this could well have been a turning point in Joe's career, the album where it all really started to come together. The 13 tracks here bring together the blues, rock and a dose of soul, all underpinned with Bonamassa's languid and sassy guitar playing. Such is the quality of this album that tracks like Walk In My Shadows and New Day Yesterday are still live favourites today.
Bonamassa is the vanguard of the current blues renaissance, it is easy to see why!
