Isobel Campbell

Ghost of Yesterday

Artist: Bill Wells & Isobel Campbell

Ghosts of Yesterday is a collaborative record of lesser known Billie Holiday tracks, recorded by Isobel Campbell of The Gentle Waves and previously Belle and Sebastian, and Scottish jazz musician Bill Wells.

Although at first this may appear an odd choice of artist for Campbell to cover, it's her very different voice and style that make this album so intriguing. Campbell's soft and sugary vocals allow her to individualise the songs and make them her own. However Billie Holiday's memory still dominates this album with the use of her unique and powerful lyrics.

This mini album is peppered with disturbing and hauntingly persistent beats that echo throughout and...

Ballad Of The Broken Seas

Artist: Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan

At first glance, it's a bizarre pairing: Isobel Campbell, formerly of Scots twee-popstrels Belle and Sebastian, and Mark Lanegan, the giant redwood who towered at the microphone of Seattle's Americana demi-legends Screaming Trees. But on Ballad Of The Broken Seas, we see not only many points of conciliation between these two diverse vocalists, but learn a little more about each in the process. Lanegan's last few albums have been dour, zombified affairs, but on "(Do You Wanna) Come Walk With Me" his rich, lightning-scarred vocal sounds warm, revitalised--romantic, even.

Campbell, meanwhile, is anything but a wallflower: it's her understated, siren-like vocals tha...

Sunday At Devil Dirt

Artist: Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan

He has a voice made of vintage leather, probably sprinkles tobacco on his cornflakes, cut his rock-incisors in the Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age and is currently also one half of post-grunge supergroup The Gutter Twins. She has a voice like a mild summer breeze whistling through a meadow and once drizzled aural honey over Belle & Sebastian's twee indie-pop. It's like a marriage made from a Hell's Angel and waiflike virgin choirgirl--you can just imagine the disparaging looks from the vicar. But as Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan renew the vows originally made on a porch swing with 2006's well received bout of twilight Americana, Ballad of the Broken Seas...

Milkwhite Sheets

  Artist: Isobel Campbell

There are plenty who would (and indeed do) dine out on a Mercury Music Prize nomination to the point where Gillian McKeith appearing from behind a trifle wagging her bitter, spindly finger would seem a distinct probability, but the unerringly prolific Isobel Campbell didn't so much as take her coat off. We're talking an hors d'oeuvre at best, or a serving of tapas; we're too many works into an esteemed career for a starter metaphor to be useful. A matter of months after Ballad Of The Broken Seas, her textured collaboration with gravel-voiced US bluesman Mark Lanegan, and even less since it swept into the public consciousness with a Mercury endorsement, the next ins...

Keep Me In Mind Sweetheart

  Artist: Isobel Campbell, Mark Lanegan

After two full albums of juxtaposed exceptionalism from these two diametrically opposed but deeply complimentary voices, we can probably stop being shocked that they work together so well. The beauty and the beast metaphor has legs, sure, but it's really just a thing of beauty. The tracks on this 6-track postscript EP were, title track aside, leftovers from the Sunday At Devil Dirt sessions too good to sweep away with the cigarette ends and straw. And while the quality is as continuous as you might expect, the songs have a flavour that justifies them being singled out for their own vessel. Where tracks on the full length album were performance pieces succeeding thr...
