The reverence in which Miller is held, so long after his death in 1944, is remarkable but hardly surprising. To be sure, his untimely demise has something to do with it, but he succeeded in taking the most popular elements of other big-bands and marrying them with extremely well-chosen songs of the time, in a formula which still comes across as craftily assembled and slickly played.
