Sinatra already had one youthful career behind him by the time he made Songs for Swingin' Lovers!. His were no longer the lustrous pipes of the kid crooner from Hoboken--the voice that made bobbysoxers swoon--but from the first notes of the opening track ("You Make Me Feel So Young"), he seems to have discovered a musical fountain of youth that fully justifies the exclamation point in the album title. There is a buoyant new spring in his step, accented by Nelson Riddle's lighter-than-air arrangements, that makes the Columbia records of Sinatra's younger days sound stiff and stodgy in comparison. Even chestnuts like "Old Devil Moon", "Pennies from Heaven", "...

This live album captures Frank Sinatra at the peak of his Rat Pack years. Recorded in 1966 at the Sands hotel in Las Vegas, crammed full of Sinatra standards and littered with musical legends, this album has become the de facto standard for arranging big band brass. Frank is backed by the Count Basie Orchestra, which at the time was the best big band in the world. The orchestra is arranged and conducted by the youthful but already accomplished Quincy Jones. From the moment drummer Sonny Payne strikes up the band, the excitement never stops. The sheer power of the playing, from sight-read parts, puts many rock bands to shame. A master wrote each note and each song is craft...

The first of many artistic milestones in the long and illustrious collaboration of Frank Sinatra and arranger Nelson Riddle that began at Capitol Records, In the Wee Small Hours is a first in other notable ways as well: it was the pair's first 12-inch LP; their first album devoted entirely to ballads; the first "concept album", a programme of songs designed to be heard in a particular sequence that sustains a mood and suggests a story; the introduction of Sinatra's definitive "saloon singer" persona; and the first flowering of Sinatra's mature artistic sensibility. Oh, and it's a masterpiece, too. The cover portrait suggests the mood of late-night desolatio...

My Way: the Best of Frank Sinatra collects 46 tracks culled from the estimable American singer's vast back-catalogue for a remarkable two-CD set. Sinatra was one of the greatest voices of his--or any--generation, and for the most part, these songs are some of Old Blue Eyes' finest works: among the best are "Come Fly with Me", "Lady Is a Tramp" and "I Get a Kick out of You". But with such an immense and classic back-catalogue of songs to choose from, it's a shame that the compilers felt it necessary to add so much cheese: "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "Mrs Robinson", for example, don't do Sinatra, the songs, or the listener any justice. Still, that's why CD player...
