Souljacker is the fourth album from the Eels front man, "E" Named after an American serial killer who claimed to steal the souls of his victims, and dedicated to Life's lost, this fourth visit to E's deadpan world is slyer, more awkward, beautiful and odd than anything he's done since "Novocain For The Soul" established him as the ultimate geek back in 1996. Depicting all manner of tragic misfits from teenage witches ("Teenage Witch") to the desperately lonely ("Friendly Ghost"), Souljacker should be a depressing listen. But after the fantastically ramshackle soundtrack of dirty guitars, cosy strings and ambling break beats, E's greatest gift is the ability ...

Head Eel Mark "E" Everett purges his soul with a smile on Shootenanny!, as he delivers bursts of bittersweet wit and light-hearted drama. Unlike solemn 1996 epic Electro-Shock Blues and 2001's thorny Souljacker, E's songwriting here puts the emphasis on light melodies and clean pop craft. While his limber genre-jumping often earns comparisons to Beck, there's also some of Wilco's Jeff Tweedy in E's razor-burn voice. And though Shootenanny! isn't out on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot's experimental ledge, it has a similar unruly twang that injects a dose of whimsy into soul-searching songs such as "Love of the Loveless". "Wrong About Bobby", for in...

Eels burst out to prominence with 1996's witty, bold paean to geekdom Beautiful Freak, which matched black humour with bold arrangements and catchy melodies. Its follow-up, Electro Shock Blues--written against the backdrop of the suicide of frontman E's sister and the terminal disease afflicting his mother--was beautiful, but its bleak content proved too naked for fans of hits like "Novocaine For The Soul" and "Susan's House". Daisies Of The Galaxy pulls back from the abyss to which E took his music having lighter arrangements and more of his quirky lyricism. The themes are largely unchanged--his mother died during the making of the album and it opens...

E, the guitarist, vocalist and songwriter with LA band Eels, had already recorded two solo albums before teaming up with drummer Butch and bassist Tommy to produce Beautiful Freak. Opener and single "Novocaine for the Soul" set the tone: melodic, articulate pop that, like fellow LA musician Beck, makes startling and inventive use of samples, beats and odd arrangements. The Eels' music takes in post-Nirvana grunge, soul, country, hip-hop, and even jazz, all without sounding derivative; E's intensely personal lyrics are similarly multi-faceted, blending wit, angst, disaffection, and surreal urban detail--as in the mournfully soundtracked cross-city trek of "Susan's H...

The sound of Eels' Electro-Shock Blues, the follow-up to the band's intriguing Beautiful Freak, reflects a year in which leader Mark "E" Everett suffered the loss of his sister to suicide as well as the illness of his mother and other tragedies. The music's hushed, sometimes dark sound and Everett's earnest vocals are often more convincing than his diary-entry lyrics, despite the power and daring inherent in describing illness in alt-pop settings that recall everything from hip-hop to Tom Waits. --Rickey Wright

It may have taken several years for Eels frontman Mark Oliver Everett, a.k.a. E, to write and record Blinking Lights and Other Revelations, but the end result is no less than a masterpiece. At two discs and 33 tracks, it's a veritable epic, but when your topic is no less than life itself, it's good to have a bit of space to work in. This is a grown-up album about being a grown-up, and in the years it took to create, Everett has done a lot of growing up, and dealt with a lot of tragedy: his mother died of cancer, his sister committed suicide, and his cousin was on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11. With all that, it's almost a wonder that Blinking ...
