Trio Vol.1

Artist: Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt

"Appalachia circa 1907" is the way they described it after release. It wasn't, of course, but it was as close as you could come in 1987 and still hope to sell the million copies that this ended up selling. The "Three Tenors" of country music juggle leads, complement each other to often haunting effect and subjugate their egos to a greater cause. The songs run the gamut from primordial country favourites like "Rosewood Casket" and "Hobo's Meditation", to 1950s pop (a rather anomalous "To Know Him Is To Love Him") and mainstream country. The instrumentation is restrained, the vocals are unfailingly lovely and the result is a trio that is more than the sum of its parts. -...

This is,in my opinion, the best of the "TRIO" cds. It features Dlooy Parton,Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, three of the best traditional country singers. Their harmony is tight and sweet and their voices blend effortlessly. I have the rest of the "TRIO" cds but this is,by far,my favourite. I love the selection of songs on this cd especially "Telling me lies" and "I've had enough". Although this was produced in 1995 I think it is timeless.

The Essential Dolly Parton

Artist: Dolly Parton, Porter Wagoner, Kenny Rogers, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Ricky Van Shelton

Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 Almost as good as can be expected of a double CD, 2005-07-14
You may remember a previous compilation, Ultimate Dolly Parton, that was released a couple of years ago. The standard American version was a single CD containing 20 tracks. The UK version had those tracks plus a bonus re-mix of Early morning breeze. There was also a double-CD version that contained 36 tracks, available by mail order only from one outlet in the USA, which did not allow orders from outside the USA. However, this version was released as standard in Germany so anybody who wanted it could by the German version if they couldn't buy (or didn't know about) the German version - it is available from several Amazon sites. This new compilation is a re-packaging and re-issue of that double-CD with one extra track added - Shine. Therefore, if you've already got the 36-track version of Ultimate Dolly Parton, you don't need this - you can buy Shine elsewhere. The remainder of this review is for those who haven't got the 36-track double CD.

To anybody who already owns a compilation of Dolly's music for RCA, the track listing here has a familiar look to it with few exceptions. The exceptions are Please don't stop loving me, a sensational duet with Porter Wagoner not normally included on Dolly's solo compilations, To know him is to love him, from the first Trio album, and Why'd you come in here looking like that, from Dolly's period with Columbia.

The other tracks here include many Dolly classics, notably Jolene (her only UK top ten solo hit), Islands in the stream (a duet with Kenny Rogers that became a USA number one pop hit and UK top ten hit), Here you come again (a USA top three pop hit), Coat of many colors (Dolly's autobiographical signature song), Bargain store (which some radio stations thought too risqué), 9 to 5 (a USA number one pop hit), It's all wrong but it's all right (much more risqué than Bargain store), My Tennessee mountain home (a look at the good times in her childhood), Love is like a butterfly (one of Dolly's finest romantic songs), The seeker (another great romantic song though this one can also be interpreted as a gospel song), Mule skinner blues (a cover of a Jimmie Rodgers song that provided Dolly with her first major American country hit - it made the top three), Joshua (her first number one country hit) and Dumb blonde (her first country hit of any size - it made the top thirty).

Even 37 tracks can't include everything though I will admit to being particularly disappointed at the omission of Yellow roses, a number one country hit and one of my favorite Dolly songs. Other omissions include Real love (a duet with Kenny Rogers), Applejack, Baby I'm burning, Think about love and Do I ever cross your mind.

If you only want one collection of Dolly's music covering both her traditional country and her pop-country music, make it this one. Even if you want to build a collection, this is a great way to start.

I have lots of collections by Dolly and this one rates as highly as any. Its a gorgeous set of typical Dolly tunes performed in the best Dolly fashion. I thought I knew every one of her tunes but this cd threw up a few top class new ones eg "J J Sneed". And at such a bargain price!

I like the original Dolly stuff and this is just as good, even better with the title track and a couple of others on here. Its one of those CD's thats going to be on a loop for quite some time in the car. Brilliant to sing along to if maybe a little high for my range! Maybe just as well no one can hear me. Some lovely tunes, some lovely lyrics. I really love this album.

The Very Best of Dolly Parton Vol.2

Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 More greatest hits, 2008-01-15
This is the second volume in what is really a Greatest Hits collection as these tracks represent Dolly Parton's most commercially successful songs. It includes the brilliant story songs Joshua, Down From Dover and Harper Valley PTA, moving ballads like Heartbreaker, To Daddy, Where Beauty Lives In Memory, Just Because I'm a Woman and the magnificent Emmylou Harris composition Boulder To Birmingham, a song written in memory of Gram Parsons. Other highlights include the Elvis cover In The Ghetto and the duet with Porter Wagoner: Please Don't Stop Loving Me. Together with the first volume it is a great introduction to the music of one of the most delightful of all female country singers but for longtime fans, the real gems are found on albums like Coat of Many Colors, The Essential Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton - 20 greatest Hits, and on solo albums like Little Sparrow and The Grass Is Blue.

I've not really been a country fan in the past but thought I should give it a try. I've always admired Nashville musicians but have been put off by the sentiment/slush that goes with some elements of this genre. I must admit that I've enjoyed this album. The familiarity of many of the songs has made it easy listening for me.
