Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez; Fantasía para un gentilhombre No1-5

  Artist: Joaquin Rodrigo

Premiered in 1940, Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez has survived innumerable arrangements and transcriptions for a variety of other instruments (including a version for flugelhorn and brass band--memorably heard on the Brassed Off soundtrack) to become the single most famous and popular piece of music ever written for classical guitar. It's reputation, of course, is entirely justified, and any doubts that this passionate and emotionally charged music will pall as a result of over-exposure are dispelled utterly by Craig Ogden's warm-hearted advocacy. Ogden's technique is so highly developed that he presents Rodrigo's formidable demands on the soloist a...

Meditations - Works for Guitar

Like his fellow countryman John Williams, Australian-born guitarist Craig Ogden is no slouch when it comes to performing new repertoire. So, for an album of "meditative" music that could have been an excuse simply to dust-off some old classical guitar warhorses, Ogden fearlessly throws in four premiere recordings of contemporary pieces to broaden the disc's appeal. Takashi Yoshimatsu's Wind Color Vector uses the guitar to evoke the elemental nature of the wind (it's one part of a three-movement work inspired by wind, water and sky) with extensive use of harmonics; while his Two Little Pieces are musical depictions of "a lonely fish" (lots of swirling right h...

Music from the Novels of Louis de Bernières

There's a scene in Captain Corelli's Mandolin where the eponymous hero chooses to demonstrate his mandolin-playing prowess by performing the first movement of Hummel's concerto--except that he mystifies and exasperates his audience by doing nothing, then reveals that he's simply counting the first 45 bars of orchestral introduction before the mandolin soloist can enter. It's a richly funny scene, demonstrating author Louis de Bernières' intimate knowledge of the mandolin repertoire, but it's all the more amusing if the reader actually knows the Hummel concerto. Guitarist Craig Ogden found similar instances in De Bernières' Latin trilogy where his own knowledge of...
