This feels a bit like of mix of Percy Adlon's earlier, brilliant 'Bagdad Café' and
Robert Altman's 'Three Women', set in Alaska.
k.d. lang plays an androgynous miner who falls in love with a straight,
private, local German librarian. They both have muddy, tragic pasts
that slowly emerge. There are some deeply moving moments, and some
wonderful slightly magical realist touches. And the cinematography is
very good.
But lang - a breathtaking singer - is only an OK actress in a role that
could have been amazing in a great actress' hands. And the ending seems
to want to neatly wrap up a film that's not really about simple
questions with neat answers.
Worthwhile, but felt like it had the promise to be much more.

Live by Request is, most certainly, a live recording of KD Lang, though nobody in the audience seems to do much requesting. Taped in December 2000 in New York, it shows Lang and her band before a smallish audience, rattling out a few of her better-known songs and some of Lang's generally creditable readings of standards, in between interruptions from a host who walks Lang through brief discussions of her career and influences. Listening to Lang sing is, of course, no hardship: few indeed are the vocalists who can mix it with the legacies of Roy Orbison ("Crying") and Patsy Cline ("Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray") and emerge with dignity intact, never mind reput...

My wife bought me this for my birthday. We had seen KD on a recent BBC4 session and were mesmerised by her performance. This DVD enhances that impression through her incredible voice and her wonderful sense of humour too. Fortunately this DVD does not have the usual interruptions that some of the other Live By Request offerings include. An absolute must of you like KD to any degree.

Wonderful live recording,almost as good as being there, 2001-03-10
If only I had a big screen do do this video justice! This is truely Tony and the Ralph Sharon trio at its wonderful best, in a small 'cabaret type' setting, with plenty of close ups of Tony and sound quality is excellent. I have seen him live and this is a real treasure to remind me of those evenings that are so special with such a magic performer in his prime. He truely does get better and better. If you can't be there with him this is the next best thing!

The Last Don - Excellent, 2010-04-17
You must watch this one first then get The Last Don II. This is the best of mini series making and I recommend you to watch it - its well worth the money and the time to watch it.
Many thanks for me being able to watch this over again - the story line is brilliant and its so good my daughter loved it too.
Hence why I bought them for her - and Im borrowing them when shes watched them. We both love Jason Gedrick and you just want to run off with him.
Power, lust, love and revenge and murder all the makings for a good mini series.
Watch it you wont be disappointed.
