Tim Curry

Legend [Blu-ray] [1985]

  Rated: Parental Guidance
Staring: Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry, David Bennent, Alice Playten
Director: Ridley Scott

This strange, 1985 experiment by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) starred the up-and-coming Tom Cruise in a fairy-tale world of dwarfs and unicorns and demons. After the horn of a unicorn is broken, darkness and winter descend upon the world. Cruise's character, helped along by a magic sprite played by David Bennent (The Tin Drum), descends into hell to save paradise. This movie is almost a classic case of art direction gone amok. The somewhat amorphous Cruise doesn't lend much dramatic focus or artistic definition, but the drama between Tim Curry's satanic majesty and Mia Sara's character, who becomes a sort of princess of the netherworld, is pretty captivating....

A Turtle's Tale: Sammy's Adventure (2D + 3D) [DVD]

  Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Dominic Cooper, John Hurt, Gemma Arterton, Melanie Griffith, Isabelle Fuhrman
Director: Ben Stassen

It might not be the highest profile animated film of the year, but that’s no reason to write off A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventure 3D. It’s a film aimed at a younger audience, with a strong ecological message at its heart, and bears more than a passing tip of the hat to Finding Nemo. Yet while it doesn’t measure up to Pixar’s movie, children are likely to be content for the length of its running time.

A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventure 3D tells the story of Sammy the turtle, and takes in five decades of his life and the colourful characters he meets along the way. It’s significantly enlivened ...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show - Single Disc Edition [DVD] [1975]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O'Brien, Patricia Quinn
Director: Jim Sharman

If a musical sci-fi satire about an alien transvestite named Frank-n-Furter, who is building the perfect man while playing sexual games with his virginal visitors, sounds like an intriguing premise for a movie, then you're in for a treat. Not only is The Rocky Horror Picture Show all this and more, but it stars the surprising cast of Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick (as the demure Janet and uptight Brad, who get lost in a storm and find themselves stranded at Frank-n-Furter's mansion), Meat Loaf (as the rebel Eddie), Charles Gray (as our criminologist and narrator) and, of course, the inimitable Tim Curry as our "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania"....

The Secret of Moonacre [DVD] [2008]

  Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Ioan Gruffudd, Juliet Stevenson, Dakota Blue Richards, Tim Curry, Natascha McElhone
Director: Gabor Csupo

The Secret Of Moonacre is a charming adaptation of Elizabeth Goudge’s novel The Little White Horse. Starring The Golden Compass’ Dakota Blue Richards, she plays young teenage orphan Maria Merryweather, who inherits a single book from her father.

That book, however, is the catalyst to what happens next in The Secret Of Moonacre, as the story bursts to life, throwing Maria into the middle of a feud between two families, the Merryweathers and the De Noirs. As she eventually makes her way through the book, Maria understands what she needs to do, and realises that the fate of Moonacre Valley could well be in her hands.

Annie - Special Anniversary Edition [DVD] [2004]

  Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Aileen Quinn, Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Ann Reinking, Tim Curry
Director: John Huston

Though it's not in the same league as the classic screen musicals, Annie's heartwarming rags-to-riches storyline, social comment (shallow as it may be) and catchy songs make for an entertaining and unpretentious 90 minutes' viewing. Aileen Quinn is the irrepressible titular orphan, by no means as irritating as she looks in the cover picture; Albert Finney is Oliver Warbucks, the tyrannical tycoon (with a hidden heart of gold, of course) who adopts her for a week in the interests of good PR. The real show-stopper, though, is Carol Burnett as the gin-soaked harpy Miss Hannigan, ruling with an iron fist over an orphanage full of unruly girls, flirting with every man i...

Hunt For Red October Special Edition [DVD] [1990]

  Rated: Parental Guidance
Staring: Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, James Earl Jones
Director: John McTiernan

Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting post-movie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic co-star: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for appro...
