The Apartment [DVD]

  Rated: Parental Guidance
Staring: Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, Fred MacMurray, Ray Walston, Jack Kruschen
Director: Billy Wilder

Romance at its most anti-romantic--that is the Billy Wilder stamp of genius, and this Best Picture Academy Award winner from 1960 is no exception. Set in a decidedly unsavoury world of corporate climbing and philandering, the great filmmaker's trenchant, witty satire-melodrama takes the office politics of a corporation and plays them out in the apartment of lonely clerk CC Baxter (Jack Lemmon). By lending out his digs to the higher-ups for nightly extramarital flings with their secretaries, Baxter has managed to ascend the business ladder faster than even he imagined. The story turns even uglier, though, when Baxter's crush on the building's melancholy elevator operator (...

The Wedding Planner [DVD] [2001]

  Rated: Parental Guidance
Staring: Jennifer Lopez, Matthew McConaughey, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Justin Chambers, Judy Greer
Director: Adam Shankman

The good news is, yes, Jennifer Lopez can do comedy. In The Wedding Planner Lopez is Mary, a lovable woman who believes "those who can't do, teach. Those who can't wed, plan!" Her slapstick moments are light-hearted and offer a spot-on performance as the compulsive-yet-sweet planner. The bad news is Lopez didn't get much of a vehicle in which to test drive her newfound comedic skills.

The main problem with this film is that no one wants to hurt anyone else's feelings. Everyone is just so gosh-darn nice. In a subplot, Mary's father is trying to arrange her marriage to just the nicest Italian boy. Gee, he's sweet. Golly, Mary's rival in love Fran is so nice. Yet,...

Best In Show [DVD] [2001]

Rated: Suitable for 12 years and over
Staring: Fred Willard, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Jennifer Coolidge, Jane Lynch
Director: Christopher Guest

No-one can deny that the British love their dogs, but Best in Show proves that the Americans are just as canine crazy. Christopher Guest's (This is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman) latest mockumentary looks at the lives and dodgy doggie loves of the contestants in the USA's most prestigious dog show, The Mayflower. The comedy is observational and mostly improvised, but there are also some genuinely hilarious set pieces and running gags as well as some perfectly timed one-liners, all of which repay repeated viewing. Owners really do become like their dogs as Guest presents a parade of brilliantly observed caricatures, revealing their human weaknesses a...

WALL-E (2 Disc Special Edition) [DVD]

  Rated: To Be Announced
Staring: Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Fred Willard, John Ratzenberger, Jeff Garlin
Director: Andrew Stanton

Pixar genius reigns in this funny romantic comedy, which stars a robot who says absolutely nothing for a full 25 minutes yet somehow completely transfixes and endears himself to the audience within the first few minutes of the film. As the last robot left on earth, Wall-E (voiced by Ben Burtt) is one small robot--with a big, big heart--who holds the future of Earth and mankind squarely in the palm of his metal hand. He's outlasted all the "Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class" robots that were assigned some 700 years ago to clean up the environmental mess that man made of earth while man vacationed aboard the luxury spaceship Axiom. Wall-E has dutifully gone about his...

Roxanne [DVD] [1987]

  Rated: Parental Guidance
Staring: Steve Martin, Daryl Hannah, Rick Rossovich, Shelley Duvall, John Kapelos
Director: Fred Schepisi

In 1987, almost 100 years after its first production, the romantic story of Cyrano de Bergerac found new life in a winsome film written by Steve Martin. Roxanne updates the tale with a smart 80s' spin, yet writer-star Martin stays close to the old-fashioned heart of the matter. He plays a small-town fireman named CD Bales, whose otherwise unremarkable existence is crowned by an amazingly long nose. He falls for the world's most beautiful astronomer (Daryl Hannah), but he is embarrassed by the size of his proboscis and prefers to stay on the sidelines. Like Cyrano, the shy CD instead helps a handsome friend (Rick Rossovich) woo the fair lady by providing flowery sen...

How High [DVD]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Method Man, Redman, Obba Babatundé, Mike Epps, Anna Maria Horsford
Director: Jesse Dylan

Grab your favourite munchies: Red and Meth, that dope-addled dynamic duo, are going to Harvard. And while it's not exactly demanding viewing, How High is destined to become a guilty pleasure of the cannabis crowd. The plot's a familiar one--take the basic selling points of any Cheech & Chong movie (a pair of shambolic protagonists who smoke lots of weed and drive funky 70s-style cars), graft them onto a generic "raising hell on campus" teen movie scenario and shake vigorously. The result is a prosaic effort that does contain some all-too-brief moments of genuine humour. Red and Meth, aka Redman and Method Man, may look like the world's oldest freshmen, but both off...

Epic Movie [DVD] [2007]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Kal Penn, Adam Campbell, Fred Willard, Mary Castro, Jennifer Coolidge

By dint of the inexplicable popularity of their send-up of movie genres in the parody movies Scary Movie and Date Movie, writer/director duo Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer probably got an epic-sized bucket of cash for this hastily stitched pastiche of drive-by entertainment. There's no particular variety of movie they were sent to send up this time, unless big box-office grossers has now become a genre in and of itself. If so, Epic Movie may well qualify as part of that league itself. Very little expense has been spared to make so-called "comic" references to a slew of mostly recent blockbusters--The Chronicles of Narnia, Borat, Ha...
