Holiday Inn (Special Edition) [1942] [DVD]

  Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Marjorie Reynolds, Virginia Dale, Walter Abel
Director: Mark Sandrich

Holiday Inn is a perennial, Christmas-season favourite from 1942 teamed Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire as entertainers (and rival suitors of Marjorie Reynolds) running an inn that is only open on holidays. It's a great excuse for lots of singing and dancing, seamlessly wrapped in a catchy story, and Astaire's frequent director Mark Sandrich (Top Hat, Shall We Dance?) doesn't let us down. The Irving Berlin numbers (each one connected to a different holiday) are winners. Crosby's warm performance of "White Christmas" is a movie touchstone. --Tom Keogh

Robin And The 7 Hoods [1964]

  Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Bing Crosby
Director: Gordon Douglas

Robin and the 7 Hoods mirthfully gives the Robin Hood legend a Depression-era, mobstown Chicago setting. There, North Side boss Robbo (Frank Sinatra) hopes to get a leg up in his power struggle with rival racketeer Guy Gisborne (Peter Falk). Robbo sees himself as a latter-day Robin Hood with philanthropic fronts enabling him to scam the rich, take his cut then give to the poor. Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Bing Crosby and Barbara Rush joins in the giddy, gangsterish fun. And the jazzy Sammy Cahn/James Van Heusen score (including Sinatra's classic 'My Kind Of Town') is the perfect match for this all-star cast. Chicago will be your kind of town, when you share the music a...

White Christmas [DVD] [2001]

  Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen, Dean Jagger
Director: Michael Curtiz

This semi-remake of Holiday Inn (the first movie in which Irving Berlin's perennial, Oscar-winning holiday anthem was featured) doesn't have much of a story, but what it does have is choice: Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, an all-Irving Berlin song score, classy direction by Hollywood vet Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood), VistaVision (the very first feature ever shot in that widescreen format), and ultrafestive Technicolor! Crosby and Kaye are song-and-dance men who hook up, romantically and professionally, with a "sister" act (Clooney and Vera-Ellen) to put on a Big Show to benefit the struggling ski-resort lodge r...

Going My Way [DVD]

  Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Bing Crosby, Barry Fitzgerald, Frank McHugh, James Brown, Jean Reno
Director: Leo McCarey

This irresistible Oscar winner from writer-director Leo McCarey (An Affair to Remember) stars Bing Crosby as a low-key, crooning priest who joins the parish of a no-nonsense but sweet old Irish man of the cloth (Barry Fitzgerald). While Bing turns local toughs into a choir, the elder priest worries over the church building fund and whether he'll get a chance to see his old mother back in Ireland before she dies. One would have to have a heart of stone not to be won over by this charmer, with a lovely ending guaranteed to make you bawl for a week. --Tom Keogh

High Society [DVD] [1956]

  Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Celeste Holm, John Lund
Director: Charles Walters

MGM's bold idea to remake George Cukor's Oscar-winning upper-class romantic farce, The Philadelphia Story, into a star-studded technicolor musical with Cole Porter tunes somehow works splendidly and remains an underrated gem. Even the plot and character names--and some bits of dialogue--all remain the same as the original. Crooning Bing Crosby replaces Cary Grant as the wealthy ex-husband trying to win back his soon-to-be-remarried ex-wife, spoiled ice queen Tracy Lord (Grace Kelly, stunning and aloof in her last film role, originated in the earlier comedy by Katherine Hepburn). Unlike Grant, however, Crosby has jazz great Louis Armstrong, playing himself, in his c...
