Billy Crystal

The Princess Bride [DVD] [1987]

  Rated: Parental Guidance
Staring: Cary Elwes, Peter Falk, Mandy Patinkin, Peter Cook, Billy Crystal
Director: Rob Reiner

Screenwriter William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his sceptical grandson (Fre...

This has got to be one of the best children films around. It is an eighties production that is exceeding well polished (except for the man eating rodents......) and entertaining for both children and adults alike. I remember it when it first came out and I thought it was ace then (and I was around twenty at the time) and now I have just watched it again and feel the same way and my children loved it too (6 to 8 years old).

This Is Spinal Tap - 25th Anniversary Edition [DVD] [1984]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Andrew Divoff, Rob Reiner, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, June Chadwick
Director: Rob Reiner

The comedic genius of This Is Spinal Tap is confirmed by the fact that a majority of studio executives were utterly clueless about its brilliance. As a first-time director and cowriter, Rob Reiner must have felt simultaneously frustrated and elated, knowing that the obtuseness of movie executives was a clue to his debut project's potential greatness. Now, of course, the clarity of hindsight and the rarity of superior satire have turned This Is Spinal Tap into one of the funniest documentary spoofs of all time. Reiner and the members of "Tap" (Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer) couldn't have picked a better target for their satire, because heav...

For a long time fan of the film this has been a great purchase.

I'm not going to review the film here, but I think some clarification needs to be made about those who have criticised the packaging and contents.

The micro-amp is just that - a proper Marshall MS2 Micro Amp - Black. It's also customized with the dials marked up to 11, but other than that it's the real deal. It's a fun in-joke for someone who owns a guitar, but it's not particularly useful otherwise.

The DVDs have all the features of the original release, and these are also on the blu-ray too. Personally, I never watch the extras on DVDs or bluray anyway, unless there's something particularly compelling, but the film looks like it should - that's to say that it was filmed to look like a documentary produced on a handheld camera, not a slick hi-tech Hollywood blockbuster.

The packaging was fine for me - it arrived in a large box, carefully packed by Amazonians, and the shrink wrapped product does contain a lot, so just be extra careful when opening it, and before you pull the top off the box, take a bit of care removing the blurb that's glued to the back of the container using that removeable tacky stuff. It's a miracle of paper engineering, but you still have to treat it with a bit of respect!

When Harry Met Sally [DVD] [1989]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher, Bruno Kirby, Steven Ford
Director: Rob Reiner

Highly influential, When Harry Met Sally revitalised (in 1988) the moribund romantic comedy genre, made a superstar of Meg Ryan, and in two minutes of heavy breathing gave cinema one of its most memorable scenes. Set over 12 years in New York, young professionals Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Ryan) go from meeting to becoming friends to, well--this is a romantic comedy. Benefiting from an observant and witty script by Nora Ephron, it also offers insight into the differences between men and women. More importantly it's very funny, though the most hilarious scene is also the least believable: Sally is really too conventional to do that in a crowded restaura...

Not usually a chick flick kind of girl, but this is the exception. It has aged remarkably well, given how old it is. I've always loved this film and couldn't resist buying it on DVD (I already own it on VHS) when I saw the price.

Monsters, Inc. [Blu-ray] [2001]

  Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Mary Gibbs, Jennifer Tilly
Director: Peter Docter, David Silverman, Lee Unkrich

It’s hard to pinpoint just which part of the Monsters Inc high definition presentation will blow you away the most. Will it be the gorgeous colours that flash before your eyes? Will it be the picking up of even the most minute details? Or will it, as we suspect, be the fur on the creatures that inhabit the world of Monsters Inc, most specifically the big blue monster himself, Sulley?

Pixar films, as you might expect, have been exceptionally well served by the Blu-ray format, and you can chalk Monsters Inc up as a raging success, too. This is genuinely reference quality visual and audio material that you get here, with few films coming close to t...

Bought for when the grandchildren stayed, and to test out our new DVD player! A success on both fronts but the bonus was a highly enjoyable film for us too. It's one of those films that are so cleverly written that you can perceive them on two levels so suits all ages. It has all the ingredients of a good story with scary bits, a happy ending and a strong moral message.

Monsters Inc. [2002] [DVD]

  Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Mary Gibbs, Steve Buscemi, James Coburn
Director: David Silverman, Lee Unkrich, Pete Docter

The monsters in Monsters, Inc. are just so incredibly cute--and they know it. Whereas Woody, Buzz and pals in the Toy Story saga were filled with self-doubt about just how much the children in their lives would continue to love them, here our heroic monsters and their impossibly lovable human ward Boo have no such worries, at least when it comes to the cinema audience. And that's why Monsters, Inc., for all its wondrous computer-animated artistry, its smart humour and its family-friendly appeal, doesn't quite capture the naïve charm of its predecessors.

Nevertheless, John Goodman and Billy Crystal, as scare-champions Sulley and Mike, are a great d...

Hamlet (2 Disc Special Edition)

  Rated: Parental Guidance
Staring: Kenneth Branagh, Julie Christie, Billy Crystal, Gerard Depardieu, Charlton Heston
Director: Kenneth Branagh

Kenneth Branagh's four-hour production of Shakespeare's full text for Hamlet is visually lush (shot in 70mm, which is rarely done) and full of fascinating story moments that normally get cut from shorter stage versions. (Your idea of what kind of fellow Polonius is may change quite a bit.) The unexpurgated approach is truly enlightening, and Branagh intermittently succeeds at giving familiar moments in the drama an original cinematic spin, including Hamlet's spooky confrontation with his father's ghost (Brian Blessed). (Branagh also imposes some Hollywood glitter on the proceedings by casting the likes of Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Charlton Heston and Jack Lemmon in t...

This is a fantastic cinematic production of Hamlet, let down by the fact that Branagh is far too old to play the young, mad prince. Being the age he is, he injects an older man's passion into the role, an older man's diatribe of the fortunes and misfortunes of youth. Branagh should have cast a younger man in the role of Hamlet and concentrated on his excellent directorial skills.

Brings back memories of my childhood watching this, and my parents looking on in confusion and disapproval. Yes, the picture is grainy on one episode in particular, and some of the subjects would not be considered as shocking as they were in this day and age but the comedy is still there. As soon as there's a discount on Series 2, I will be buying that as well.

Whenever I'm asked which are my best ten movies of all time, which is a game often played with friends after a meal and several glasses of wine, City Slickers (not the sequel, which is awful!) is always the first I remember! It may be seen as cheesey by some people, it may be a little dated by today's standards, but the message within it's narrative and the story's execution is timeless. I defy anyone over forty not to see themselves within the characters and at the same time, after having seen the film, not to start questioning their own place in the world. This is a film that can be enjoyed by anyone, but the true message within the film can be really appreciated by those us of a certain age who get to a point in their lives and feel that maybe, just maybe, life has passed us by and the grass is greener elsewhere. This film will put everything in perspective, all you have to do, is discover what's the most important thing in life to you...wonderful!

Deconstructing Harry [DVD] [1998]

Rated: Suitable for 18 years and over
Staring: Woody Allen, Richard Benjamin, Kirstie Alley, Billy Crystal, Judy Davis
Director: Woody Allen

Woody Allen roared back at his detractors with Deconstructing Harry, a bitterly funny treatise about the creative process. Known to mine his often tumultuous personal life for his movies, the embattled writer-director-star didn't bother to make his alter ego likable in this movie: Harry Block (Allen) pops pills, frequents prostitutes and cheats on the women in his life, then writes about their foibles in thinly disguised fiction. No wonder they're all furious with him. As Harry journeys to his alma mater with a hooker, ill pal and kidnapped son, a series of flashbacks unravel, juxtaposing Harry's relationships with their "slightly exaggerated" fictional coun...

I have been a long time Woody Allen fan but had never seen this film before. I have recently been re-watching most of his films and I think this stands amongst the very best..
The structure of the film is very clever and adds interest and variety to what is a very funny story. The casting is superb and Allen is brilliant as Harry. If you have a problem with profanity(extreme), you will probably have issues with this film, but I absolutely loved it.
